What’s up with all of the No Dogs Allowed hiking trails?

We’re still planning on getting a dog again but just realized that a lot of the trails we’ve been on recently do not allow pets. I never really paid attention before so it’s a new discovery for me. Is this rule new? When we had a dog 15 years ago, we took him everywhere and I don’t remember seeing no dogs signs. Maybe it’s just the SF/Marin County crazies imposing their will on everyone?

Why should dog owners pay taxes to maintain a beach, park, or trail if they can't take their dog or cat along?

Dogs aren't allowed on any San Mateo County trails. Teddy is not happy about that.

Maybe there have been instances of dogs attacking each other (and/or owners walking them) and getting severely injured on the trails. Call city or county parks and ask why they're not allowed.

Yet, they seem to be allowed in every restaurants, Starbucks and freaking Home Depot of all places. One just jumped on my at home depot today while I was hunting down some long lag bolts. Really pisses me off. All I got was he's friendly and no apology. I had about 10 10" long lag bolts in my hand. If I didn't pull my hand back, I would have stab that dog. OK, got that off my chest. Feeling much better now.

Maybe there have been instances of them attacking wildlife.

But as said, more likely the poo scenario.

Dogs in certain situations can also disturb nests and young'ns that are endangered..
So if they are trying to restore such a species, they make sure no dogs are allowed in the area

Well, dog owners pay for the use they get out of the park
Dog owners don't pay more then people who don't own..
Yet dogs do cause a burden, they poop and pee all over the place , I know, I walk dogs myself.. And often cause damage to wildlife as well, disturb nests, chase young animals..

So quite frankly I don't see what rights the dog would have based on his owners tax money.. the dog don't pay for chit does he.

Would you consider it fair that you would pay more taxes because of dog ownership
so your dog would chip in for the park maintenance and upkeep?
I mean, only when that happens, would your argument start to add up

Plenty of good people and dog trails in the East Bay.
Look up Briones Regional Park. It’s a ways from Marin but just thought I’d throw it out there.

We spend about 48 hours in Galveston this weekend. I was quite surprised to learn that dogs are allowed on the beach. I grew up on the gulf coast of FL and I don't think dogs were ever allowed on any of those beaches.

There are many responsible dog owners but there are some who are not. On park trails they may allow dogs on leash only but you can bet there are some off leash.

There are some dog owners who pick up after their dog and some who don't.

There are some dogs that chase and bite you and some that don't. Dog ownership comes with responsibilities. Are you sure you want the responsibility?

THe dogs are better citizens than most of the public I bet.

...but why not punish the offenders vs everyone? I despise that heavy handed methodology.

What I don’t understand is: people that pick up their dogs poop in a plastic bag, tie the end in a knot, then leave it on the trail. Wouldn’t it be better to just leave the poop so it will decompose? This goes with”why are we here” and “who killed Kennedy ?”
