I have a Speed Queen from right before they went to the water saver models. Thing is built like a tank. No frills turn knob for setting. Same with the dryer.
It's funny how many guys have said "Maytag". I'd avoid that sh.t like it was Covid. Biggest P.O.S washer I owned was a Maytag. My Frigidaire was okay. |
I've got a Whirlpool Cabrio that is about to go. It makes horrible bearing noises consistent with what you can read on the Net. That and the lid breaking. Terrible machines but I got it for free. Customer of mine was having it changed out after 3 months. He bought it from Lowes for 900+ and the lid broke. They brought the new one and told him they had so many lined up in back of the store that if he knew someone that wanted it, they'd leave it with him to give away. So I got it. It's worked well enough for 10 years I feel like I won. But, the lid is all patched up ugly, it rusted all around the lid and now it's about to lock up.
So I was being peremtive and started looking around for a used washer when I saw an ad for a Fisher and Pakel. The guy said all of his dog bedding had caused the pump to fail 2wice and he was through. Well, the pump was OK, just a bit of junk on the external fan kept it from turning. I didn't have to buy one thing for it, just clean the stinking mess up. Dog hair everywhere. I want to tell you that after going through this thing thoroughly, it's a piece of plastic junk. Yea, the famous supposedly high end German washer is Walmart cheap in construction. Nice and quiet though. It's sitting waiting for the big moment. |

The GE W/D we have now was $50. Yep, $50. We have had them 8 years? Picked them up for a song when someone passed. What we just lost is a 3.2 GE, nothing fancy. She should tell me soon what to buy. Might be one with coin slots! EDIT: That sounds bad. Thank you, from my heart, to the dearly loved departed. We knew each other not, but thank you. |
Bought Whirlpool Duet set about 17 years ago. I had quite a few instances where the washer kept trowing codes about the motor or else the door lock. I would pull the card edge connectors off and spray contact cleaner in there for a fix. It was a short term fix because the problem would come back. I finally got tired of this and so I cut off the connectors and soldered the wires straght to the boards. I eliminated all those card edge connectors, which are really only there to make assembly quick and efficient in manufacturing. I have had ZERO problems with that washer since.
One of our friends bought a house with Samsung appliances and they all went bad; she calls them Samsuck! |
Amazing pelican...our washer just quit. Went to the speed queen website...noted a dealer right in town, same dealer we bought the electrolux from. That was 4 1/2 years ago. They're sending a repair guy this PM...if no fix, speed queen sounds like the one. Also good to know it's USA made..
Oh...yes. I'm another guy who has been told to leave the laundry to someone else...and perfectly okay with that. |
I'm done fixing this one. One of the capacitors failed in October last year. Run/Start? I forget. It had plastic icicles hanging down. I have a video of how it responded after that, but the machine is done.
Thank you |

In October of 1996 I bought a Kenmore Series 80 Super Duty (Whirlpool) ..3.2 Cubic ft. One very minor problem around 2005...worked like a champ until March 2021...Rubber Coupler between the motor and trans gave out after nearly 25 years.
Went to HD for a look at new Washers..fkin junk. Called repair man, he said DO NOT GET RID OF THAT KENMORE..IT IS THE BEST MACHINE EVER MADE>>>He has one...his comment was even if you had to put $1000 into it you are better off. He said new machines only last 2 to 3 years before problems start to occur. Anyway replaced the Coupler and Pump as preventive maintenance..$315.00. Those old machines are top load agitator machines (direct drive) that they STOPPED MAKING along about 2007...now they have go to water saving spray types that do not get your cloths all that clean. and they break. THE DEAL IS..people are looking for the old agitator machines and are rebuilding them? restoring them. TRULY THEY DO NOT MAKE EM LIKE THEY USED TO! Motor and trans can go 50 years..on those old machies.. You can find guys on You Tube that make vids about rebuilding them..and resell them. BTW Dryer is a 1987 GE Gas.. Repair man also said DO NOT use slow wash as the motor has a reduced electrical current and that makes the motor work harder. and reduces it's life span. |
When Jesse White was the Maytag repairman.. the loneliest guy in town...Maytag built solid machines that would last and last and last...Now that ole Jesse has gone to his reward...they build krap.
American must get bored with something that just keeps on working and want something new and glittering...with more special features...ouuuu ouuu bright and shiny..I want...only thing is the new ones are not made to last... |

According to the guy who repairs hundreds of machines for a living..you are better off finding an older Direct Drive Whirpool made with the simple analog dials.. than buyin new.. Take it for what it is worth.I got no dog is this hunt. |

^^^ We bought pretty high end ones at Lowes. Washer was dancing around the laundry room. They tried to fix it, but replaced it with a new one. Same thing. They put anti skid pads on the floor and said live with it. Washer and dryer also had circuit repairs. Washer still does strange things like resetting the time so your clothes are in there for way too long.
We've had them for 7 years and no problems in the last few other than the odd strange thing. Not just us. Check for reviews. |
