Washing machines

Ours gave up tonight, we knew it was coming. Transmission locked up I guess. I could smell gear oil, then the belt burned. It had been pretty noisy.

Anyway, were thinking of buying a Speed Queen. Any of you have one? Experience?
What other washer would you recommend?

Thanks!

Maytag - Ours has been working for a good long time no problems. We'd been thru a couple of hand-me downs and finally got one new. I couldn't tell you how many years ago it's been working that long.

Speed Queen sold me parts and repair manuals for my w & d - not sure if any other company would do that now.

Mine are 3 years old, I’m happy- uses a fair amount of water but works pretty quickly and clothes come out clean.

Speed queen is who we use for our commercial apartment washer. Like an ugly, tough dodge truck.

Simple. Effective. Built to work.

It should outlive you by decades.

We have one of those Maytag "simple" setups. No digital touchpad, no voice activation, just twist the knob and push "start".

I am not allowed anywhere near the laundry except to make my clothes dirty.

Wifey has a special pile for everything by color, temperature, texture, OxyClean treatment, etc.

And don't even bring up how it should be folded and placed in the drawer.

You know what? I like it!

Good skills! Now all you need is to be banned from the kitchen (other than the fridge).

I love Maytag.

Thanks! I can't mess this one up. It's her washer. Now and then, hardly ever, will I get the washer going. It doesn't take but once, hands off.

Take her washing machine shopping. If they are like fridges, you have to get what is available, or wait a long time.

I only buy used Maytags. For $200 I get a reliable machine that works for at least 10 years.

After considerable effort I was deemed incompetent for doing laundry as well.

Matt, you're local, so try Danny's Appliance Service 713-339-9928 before you give up. Lots of people use Danny and his brother in our Neighborhood.

The ex-Mrs. Beard was not allowed to do my laundry after a few too many incidents, including washing and drying my favorite wool ski sweater.

Speed Queen washer and dryer. Top load washer, analog controls, no crappy electronic touchpad controls. Commercial quality, made in the U.S. Had a front loader washer, it sucked. Seal leaked and water all over the laundry room floor a few times. Touchpad controls that crapped out within a year. Got rid of it after a couple years. Before that, a Maytag that lasted 15 years. Maytag quality sketchy. So we went with the Speed Queen. Wife washes clothes almost daily, and I am not allowed anywhere near the laundry room. She’s happy that’s all that counts.

Probably has your model number look-up and specific videos. It's easier than you think.

I looked at the 'cheap' new ones and they were super flimsy and not cheap.
Basic machines went from $400-600 to $600-900.
The next grade up starting in the $1,000 range are all complicated plastic touch panels and also flimsy.

i work on airplanes with other aircraft types. some fix everything, i am generally in that group, and it goes to guys that fix nothing. the group advice is go and buy the cheapest one and when it dies do that again.

the last washer i bought the cheapest, about 5 years ago, still going strong.

My wife's goal, i think, is to do her best to keep those two machines(washer and dryer) in use 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. she comes close. i just throw my cloths through the laundry room door and walk away....i havent been fussed at for years. must be all right.

I still thing Craigster wins this one..he isn't doing laundry!!

I am Cinderella at my house. but everyone in the pool. I don't separate. I don't wear a lot of cotton either, so eff it.

only thing I do..white sheets and white towels only. I bleach the heck out off those.

if I let my wife do the laundry.. I would be turning my underwear inside out to put the cleaner side against my hole. that lady is like a camel with water..she can go a long time without doing laundry. me..i have 3 pants, etc.
