Septic tank guy came today. He said he's seen a lot of things, but never saw anyone put a pond over a septic tank. If anything ever has to be done with it the pond will have to be torn up.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1624035979.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1624035979.jpg The tank is down 6 feet at the bottom of the risers. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1624035979.jpg The guy used this 10 foot long industrial immersion blender to mix up the stuff in the tank before he started pumping. He didn't bring the extra long borescope he needed to get down that far to see into the tank, so we don't know the condition of the exit baffle. He saw no evidence of a broken or disintegrated baffle in the bottom of the tank though, so that's good. With only two people in the house he said we should be fine even with no baffle at all as long as we are reasonably careful and get it pumped out every 3 years. It was a judgement call, but I passed on having him come back to look at the baffle and thoroughly inspect the tank. If there is anything wrong with it the amount of destruction to the landscaping just to fix it is going to be so extensive I'll probably just have it replaced. I'll just have it pumped every 3 years and use it as-is as long as it continues to work. He noted that there were no stains on the riser, so the tank has never backed up. He's optimistic that we won't have any problems. |
Is your riser a one-piece poured segment? Also...what is the cement formation at the top of the tank?
With my cover off...it was just a square opening into the tank...no step (or whatever that is) I agree with your decision...leave well enough alone. |
My tank doesn't have a baffle.
I think it's weird when these things have square openings. Round seems like a much better option. |
The riser is two 3x3x3 foot castings stacked one on top of the other.
By “cement formation” I guess you mean the square thing in the tank. It’s the chamber that separates the solids side of the tank from the liquids side. The solids side is on the right. The square thing is a square tube that goes to the bottom of the tank. It has a hole in it halfway down that lets liquid in from the solids side - so no sinkers or floaters get into the liquid side. The stuff exits into the liquid side on the left. |
You must have the new-fangled version!
Mine was prob installed in the early 40's. Here's a pic of what mine is like.....(I have no bird/duck in mine) http://cchd.maryland.gov/wp-content/.../08/septic.jpg |
I’m not sure when it was installed, probably 1972. The one at my previous house, installed in 1993, was similar to above, except it had a wall across the center that separated the solids side from the liquid side. The wall had a slit about half way up that let liquid from the solids side pass into the liquids side.

^^^ Yes..they look a lot more efficient than mine.
The pic of yours looks like it might be the middle inspection port? |
you have good job. I also have part time work on bulding after classes. I am still college student and often need to do my engineering homework But sometimes I do not have much time for studying because need to work.

^^^ Thanks! It's called retirement!

A week and a half later...it's amazing what some natural rainfall will do for a seeding...

No kidding! Looking great.
And that lid is begging for some sort of figure. Gnome? Dragon? Maybe a.....turtle? |
Earlier this spring, I seeded a few diff areas. The drought came and I faithfully watered the seedings every couple of days. A month after this..no sprouts.
When the rains came...the sprouts were showing within 5 days. Nothing beats a natural rain. A turtle might look good there! |

He has a clean water tank on the truck. He hosed the blender off back into the septic tank as he pulled it out. No fingers involved! |
