Whats a long, strange trip for you?
For me, it's watching the metamorphism from counterculture to mainstream, and then reflection.

Saw my first show in the late 80's and through '95, every iteration from then until now. Been a while since I have seen them though. Took my kids to NYC to see the Bobby and Phil shows at Radio City Music Hall, but that was back in 2018, a while ago already.
Seen lots of Phish since the early 90's as well, have gone to them more in the past 10 years or so and over all more than the GD variants. A day does not go by that I do not listen to the Grateful Deal either in my car or at home, hell I have a GD Mcintosh speaker thing. Last edited by 911boost; 12-01-2025 at 07:59 PM.. |

My son has become a Deadhead, and it has been along strange trip. For years he was a fan of I guess what you call mainstream jazz - Oscar Peterson, The President, etc. Then it was New Orleans jazz, and he traveled the country with his video cameras memorializing the genre. Now it’s dancing bears and 13 points. I’ve been out to bars with him where there was no reason to believe another Deadhead would be there, but if there was (and there often was) they would find each other. It’s uncanny.

We all know they're out there
...Love the band, the music, and "the scene" ... but missed it mostly except for those glorious shows I've acquired the past 30 years ... particularly from the early 70s... God Bless Betty Cantor ![]() ... and others. |

Straight Theater, SF, Calif. 1968.
My friend and I bought a couple caps of LSD from a street seller. Two hours later... nothing. Found the guy going in to the Straight. The Dead were playing during the middle of the day.. We didn't want to spend the only money we had on tickets to get in and while we were waiting for the guy to come out, out walks Jerry. Just standing out in front smoking a joint. I told him that some dude burned us for a couple caps of acid and Jerry walked us in to the theater. We found the guy sitting by himself. Jerry told him to give us our money back. He did. I thanked Garcia and we split. Super cool guy to help us get our money back.

My long strange trips are literal, and as I have never done drugs, all in my 911. My extent of drug use is just alcohol in the form of beer. That is pretty much it.
My road trip from the very large array radio telescope, down to Truth or Consequences, NM, over to Alamogordo, to the International Space Hall of Fame, (I skipped the white sands rocket museum as it is outside and it was 105 degrees at the time) on to Roswell, NM was pretty weird. My hotel in Magdalena, NM at the strt of the trip. Truth or Consequences International Space Hall of Fame. Roswell.

What's a long, strange trip for you?
My entire life. More happens to me on a regular, consistent, constant basis than happens to 10, if not 100, other people combined. Some is surreal. It keeps like interesting but there are times I wish I had a normal life. That said, I know people with normal lives, I couldn't do it. But then if I had a normal life, I probably would never know what I'm missing.

Boulder '73. Just back from their Europe 72 tour. Got a free ticket as one might in the day. Sat down in the endzone seats opposite the stage. A young woman came by with a baggie with a cleaned ounce and zigzags and asked if I could roll. I answered affirmatively and she said roll all you want, keep the rest and pass them out at 1 PM. Apparently this happened all over the stadium as the crowd got off together around 115. Now that was a great day
