My son’s Tahoe was stolen

A while back, I posted about fixing up our sons 2005 Tahoe. He lives in Mountain View, CA and we were looking for recommendations in the general area. The thinking was, a repaint and new interior. Mechanically, it ran perfect.

He decided to save his money and put it towards his student loan.

We don’t have to worry about that now, as it was stolen sometime between Tuesday evening and Thursday morning from the gated apartment complex.

Friggen thieves.

Should be a win. The insurance will probably pay more than it's worth plus tax and pro-rated license, minus the deductible, once it's determined it isn't going to be recovered in time. He should be able to get a better one.

If it's a gated complex are there any cameras at the gates?

This sucks. Sorry to hear this.

Sorry to hear Rocket, I've been there before. Two days is probably too long of a time frame to figure it is still recoverable. Maybe not though, a family friend lost his truck in the 1980's and was found decades later. It was still being driven daily.

Yes, but whatever he buys to replace it will have gone up in price as well.

Was it at Toyota?

Doesn’t matter. If he had comprehensive insurance on it, they have to pay out today’s replacement cost. He did have comp on it, right?

Mountain View, CA? If it was worth $950 or less it wasn’t stolen. It was free to whoever wanted it.

Is it possible they towed it? Associations are known for that.

Probably have a rule like it hasn't moved for XX days or registration expired, and someone complained, so they tow it.

My brother's older Subaru was stolen after moving to Portland on the first night in their new place. He was ok with it, had thought about selling anyway. Insurance made him a decent offer 3 weeks later. The next day it was recovered in unknown condition. Now he's back waiting to see what they propose.

The garage has cameras, so he’s looking into that....The cops asked for it.

He checked with the apartment and towing company, both said they didn’t have it towed.

With it only worth I’m guessing $2-3k, he had liability only. The money he saved on full coverage, paid for the loss and he was putting it towards his student loan.

I’m not sure what he’ll get next. Probably something small and economical.

2 months after I got my 2003 F250 back from a theft recovery (punched drivers side door lock, broken ignition switch and column ) they got into it again last night and messed up the ignition switch, had to call a tow truck, couldn't turn the wheel to get the tires straight so when the tow truck operator tried to pull it up it broke the winch cable so had to wait for another truck to help get all the way onto the bed have to wait until Monday to get the repair cost

One of the best anti theft devices today is a manual tranny.....most car thieves are youngish...they can't drive a stick.

Sorry to hear but I can relate. I had my 06 Tahoe stolen from a mall parking lot. It was found 5 days later with minimal damage. It was repaired and I drove it for another 4 years. I just got rid of it.
I was told they're pretty easy to steal, punching out the drivers door lock disables the factory alarm. The lock on the steering column is just as easy.

That sucks. I just bought some Apple Airtags that I put in my luggage to confirm that it traveled with me to my final destination. It worked great. For $30, I would seriously consider leaving one in my parked car if I had to leave it in an open parking lot for extended period of time. They make for a cheap tracker.

I wonder if a Tile would also work? I have one on all of my key rings. Other than the battery being replaced every so often, it seems to be fairly accurate.

Great trucks, good luck in finding a replacement. My boy has a '03 Tahoe and loves it more than my brand new Sequoia.

With no comprehensive insurance, he is just self insured and eats the loss.

It is just weird that vehicles are that easy to steal. We all know the car companies could make it harder to steal.

We texted tonight and he said the parking lot was full of nice and newer cars, but they took his old beater.

The apartment complex will not release the video footage to him, only to the police. Obviously, that means nothing will happen.
