All indicators now is that this think will definitely be a Cat 3 and now they are saying possibly Cat 4. Wind field is gonna be huge. Hurricane force gust north of Baton Rouge for a sustained period. 12 to 15 inches of rain in the Baton Rouge area. Winds are predicted be worse than Gustaf, which was actually worse for this area that Katrina was for New Orleans. Not sure what's worse the wildfires or these damn hurricanes. Normally I listen to the predications, and prepare. However I have a real concern for this storm. Guess we will know my Monday morning...

Lots of family and friends in BR, a daughter & two grandsons in Slidell and a brother in Bay St Louis.

Good luck. Winds are just a small part of the problem, flooding is the big threat. Get to a high ground, which is pretty hard to find along the coast.

Stay safe, prepare, and if it looks too ugly, get out.

I'm here in Slidell LA. I plan on staying. Hopefully the water stays in the lake.

Now predicted to be Cat 4 when it hits.

My wife is in Pensacola right now helping settle our daughter into her new apartment. It looks like Pensacola is also directly in the path.

Ugh.....this one is going to be UGLY!

Serious question (apologies for any timing faux pas), why do people choose to live in an area that gets destroyed by nature semi-regularly?

Last week Hurricane Henri came up the east coast of the US, and potentially could have made land fall in a number of places..

It did make landfall in Rhode Island..

However the effects of this one cat 1 storm affected basically the whole northeast...

So people should not chose to live in the northeast?

Hurricane Grace made landfall in the Yucatan

Why would people live in the Yucatan? or eastern Mexico..

Mexico City was affected... hundreds of miles from the coast


Why would anyone live there??

Why would anyone live near the San Andreas fault? or the Yellowstone Basin?

I assume in your haste to hostility, you missed the part in my question about areas that are destroyed semi-regularly. The storm that messed up the NE recently happens every 100 years or so? Not exactly my definition of semi-regular. It's ok. SmileWavy

Why? Because it’s home. Born here, raised here, have family here. Prepare, build appropriately, endure a minor inconvenience for a week or so. Not saying it’s paradise, but it’s home. Don’t prepare, build in low lying areas, get what you deserve. Prudent prior planning prevents piss poor performance.

Thanks, Mark. Louisiana (New Orleans) is one of the primary ones I've always wondered about, along with coastal Florida. They get hit so hard, so often, I've often wondered what keeps people there. One of my favorite things about Arizona is we really have no "bad" weather.

I do wish you well, and hope the storm does minimal damage to your state.

In the last 20 years I have had more damage (weather related) to property in central NJ than in Key West Florida.....

Looks to take the same path as TS Fred a week earlier that dropped 17" of rain in Tennessee !
