Tesla Plaid

In a recent test the Tesla Plaid won three drag races in a row with the mighty Mclaren 765lT. It must just kill these $200,000 supercars when a heavy 4 door family car blows their doors off!!! A 2 second electric car from 0-60! Amazing!

Yup, I have a model Y with the accel upgrade, and the wife a model S. Try it and you won't go back.

JackDidley 09-25-2021 08:52 PM

Low 9s @ 150+ in the 1/4 mile. If I could pay the $$$$$$$, I would have one.

upsscott 09-25-2021 09:34 PM

It’s funny because they have to feather the throttle to stay under 150mph most of the time because there’s no roll cage. Those videos crack me up.

biosurfer1 09-25-2021 10:50 PM

So a $130,000+ car beats a $200,000 car? Big deal. I don't know any families buying either one. Both rich guys only

Tervuren 09-25-2021 11:42 PM

For some reason despite cars that hit 200MPH in less than 2 seconds at drag strips people have still been buying slower supercars for decades.

At this point most exotics are about enjoying the crafstmanship on display inside and out.

sc_rufctr 09-26-2021 12:48 AM

Yea great but can you actually use that performance on the road?

I know what would be more fun... ;)

Watched the Throttle House guys review a Taycan “Turbo” S and while these electrics are super potent and really cool, think they mentioned experiencing some motion sickness. Could definitely see how that might occur.

They do great reviews....I never miss their new releases.

I totally agree this Plaid edition is awesome in its performance, but that kind of performance uses gobs of electrons. Say, put any gas powered supercar and the Plaid together with one fueling (or charging) each on the Nurburgring and see how many times each can lap the course before the little light on the dash says "I need fuel now!". That translates to real life with range anxiety and all that. That being said, 0 - 60 in 2 seconds is amazing.

island911 09-26-2021 06:53 AM

^ nailed it.

Straight-line status war - It's for the environment, doncha know...

Every great contraption starts somewhere. For example, the Me262 had relatively limited range but ushered in a revolution. Everything is a compromise and demand for charging will drive that tech (and everything that underpins it) too. That flat-earthers can't admit or deal with reality won't hold a strong technology or science back.

if this old technology was so strong it would not need massive govt subsidies.

BTW, Dr Porsche's first car was an EV. (a century ago)

pavulon 09-26-2021 09:15 AM

Cars themselves are old tech and most car companies have received gov't funds in one way or another. So, what is your next complaint?

Tervuren 09-26-2021 09:20 AM

Electric cars once out numbered gasoline cars, and by a large margin.

I'm glad to see the old idea ressurrected and being produced again.
I'm not a fan of the fanatical fascism on display from some proponets of electric cars.

Long haul trains are not pure electric plug ins despite this being touted as the way to go for "the future".

They are electric trains that carry diesel generators on top.
Physics deterime reasons based on environmental impact, costs of manufacture, and costs of operation.

This setup allows the diesel generator to operate within a narrow band of functionality.
A narrow band allows for specific effecient tuning that a broad band direct drive engine at a variety of both speeds and loads would not achieve.
The speed of the train may vary, but the generator gets to remain in an optimal range.
There is also the ease of operation in that torque availible at zero RPM is much greater than with direct drive.

Now why are the trains not plug in electrics?
Very simple.
Oxygen.

Oxygen is significantly heavier than Carbon or Hydrogen.
Look up the weights of these molecules.
The generator gets the heaviest molecule in the chemical energy process from the surrounding air.
It doesn't have to carry it.
A battery powered plug in electric on the other hand must carry all the componets for the chemical energy storage and release.
This is a huge weight savings despite the extra weight for the engine as opposed to battery storage on plug in electric.

So long as we stick with batteries, physics will favor different solutions for different problems.
The fascist one solution is not science, it is not physics, it is not the future.

If nuclear is allowed back into the picture as a major player then that will increase the situations in which electric will win the compromise.

Enjoy a Tesla for what it is.
I wouldn't say no if someone gave me one. :)

I'm not a Mclaren fan, so I'll change the car to one of my own vs the Tesla.
My Jaguar XK with tan leather and wood burl paneling.
If I went for it out of a light, and a Jeep SRT-10 skunked me, or a Tesla, it wouldn't kill me, or my interest in my Jaaag.
It would make me smile that such beast of machines exist, and that someone is out there driving them like that.
And I'll still enjoy my own car for what it is.

island911 09-26-2021 12:58 PM

^ It's the start torque that trains need. - Starting such a huge load from 0mph is not trivial. There was a "hyper-bar" petro engine designed for the task, but still, the electric torque at 0 mph is hard to top.

what is a big deal is the family car can beat most if not all supercars, not just $200,000 ones but million and 2 million dollar cars also. Porsche 918? beats it. La Ferrari? beats it . So yes, a big deal. fastest car in the world? a big deal.

Steve Carlton 09-26-2021 02:42 PM

Till the Dodge Shockedcat comes out.

This same situation happened with the Mitshubishi Evo vs Lamborghini's and Ferrari's.
I'm not sure La Ferrari buyers will wish they had the four door.
They wanted a two seater with style and flare.

There was a Pagani with a manual transmission out at an airport speed run.
There were some comments on a youtube video about how slow the driver was with the car compared to much less expensive current model Porsches.

Owner commented that pressing go with electronic do-dads wasn't his interest.
Yes a less expensive electronicly launch controlled Porsche with electronically controlled gearbox was clocking faster than his manual Pagani without launch control.
Didn't matter, he had what we wanted, and was having fun with it.

It will be interesting to see what gets developed for faster launch control.
The power is there.
The software and AWD to apply it to the tires is the hot rod of our day.

Tires have also been advancing on many fronts in recent years.
