RIP Randy Webb

Hey guys, it's with a heavy heart that I bring you guys the news - it is, in fact, true that we have lost Randy. I'm sorry I got everyone's hopes up on the other thread, but I really did believe, from what I had gathered up to that point, that he was still with us. I'm very, very sorry for that.

I finally tracked down his obituary in his home town of Baton Rouge, LA. I've attached a jpeg image, because it was all I could get. A mutual friend in Eugene actually did the legwork on this and sent it to me.

As most of you would suspect, Randy was a very private person. He was never married and had no kids, so it was hard to track him down that way. In a way, I'm kind of saddened that I was "successful" in getting this far, but at least it brings us closure.

Sorry for the fuzzy image, but if you enlarge it, it is legible. RIP, Randy, you will be missed by many.

I am reading this from Eugene. Having just left the UO game at the half with my son. I did some research to find Randy. Yes. He was very private.

A loss that will be felt. And, a great reminder of our own mortality.

RIP Dr. Webb.

One of my favorite people here. One whose PMs I’ll keep forever, as a reminder. Goodbye, rwebb.

His mind was a busy place, its @ peace now on the other side. R.I.P.

john70t 10-16-2021 10:56 AM

I'd always thought the name was because he was "randy" and on the internet.

Arizona_928 10-16-2021 11:05 AM

Hmm. That's what he looked like.

His pm's were weird.

Jeff hoped to determine if the rumors of Randy's passing had any validity. As a Eugene resident, and someone that DID drink beers with Randy now and then over the last 15 years, he thought that I would know. I didn't - I hadn't seen Randy since the start of the pandemic. I did some digging by contacting someone locally that I knew he associated with. The worst was confirmed. Randy died of natural causes on the date shown in the obituary noted in this thread. That obituary did misstate his age - he was 69. I was forwarded the obituary attached here; I believe from his home town in Louisiana. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1634353337.png

It's interesting to hear of all of your perspectives. I believe that I'm the only person posting in this huge thread that actually had first-hand contact with him. So let me share what I experienced:

Randy was smart, well-educated, opinionated, liberal, and had wide ranging interests. You'll not be surprised to know that he loved to argue. He and I shared very similar world views and political perspectives, yet there was no visit with Randy that didn't involve some kind of argument! As some of you noted, it was possible to change his mind, so the arguments never seemed tedious or pointless. As I'm thinking of him today, it suddenly occurs to me that this was his mechanism for learning, and that's why you all know him. Randy and I got along because he had that quality that I think I cherish above all others: curiosity. I'm filled with regret that I hadn't connected with him in two years. It was something on my list of things to do that I just didn't get to.
