Home laser printer recommendations

Our ink jet printer is on its last legs and I want to replace with a black and white laser printer . I know HP/Brother/Canon and there may be others . I may take on printing out the 1500 pages of John Deere manuals I previously posted about . So what do you guys suggest on brand/model to go with ? Looks like $150.00 gets into a decent home unit .

Wifi capable would be nice , it will be used with Windows laptop . After this 1500 page job we probably only print 50 pages a year . Availability of reasonable priced toner cartridge would be nice . You guys know your stuff and respect your opinion . Thanks

Brother laser printers are not bad. Ive had mine for 4 years, no problems. Easy wireless set up with Windows. Around $100 I think.

I just got a Canon D570. Print, copy, scan, wifi. I really like it.

The only drawback is there is no feed tray to automatically put another original on glass for copy/scan.

Got it from Amazon for $195ish about a month ago. I believe its over 200 now though.

Much better than the POS HP my wife has on her computer. But she 'did her research' prior to buying...

I like Brother MFCs, reliable and toner seems reasonably priced. Get double sided printing, of course, and color. The scanner/copier features of a MFC are very useful.

MFC ........ Multi Function Copier ? What model number did you get ?

A year ago, I went through this same search. Based on recommendations from the folks here, I went with this brother. So far it's been great. I actually got one off of Amazon that was "renewed" so it was discounted quite a bit from the full price.

The limited research I have done today says Brother reviews across the product line is solid . Laser printer only around 125.00 with MFC's around 179.00 and up . I will see what is available locally , if nothing local I will order online .

We have a Brother laser at home. It works well. Model MFC-9130CW but may be an older model we have had it for 3 years or so. At our usage rate the cartridges last about 1 year. Family of 4 with 2 middle school/high school kids use is between us for business/home stuff and the kids for school stuff.

We run ours on WiFi. If I did it over I would get one w/ a network card and hardwire it to our router. Sometimes the WiFi connection is unstable to it. Not often but it's a pain when you just want to print something and it drops connection.

I went with a hp neverstop laser 1001nw. Just bc of the negative reviews on the brother's toner cartridge life.

300 shipped next day from best buy. I'm pretty happy with it. Have ran 2 reams of paper and no issues. Toner refill kit are 25 dollars.

I've had a bunch of HP over the years and they were all great.

My year old Brother is rock solid on Wi-Fi

I have a Brother HL-L2370DW for several years now. So far so good, It's set up on wifi and can print jobs from both Windows and Mac computers as well as iPad and Android tablets. It's fast and can even print double-sided (albeit at fewer pages per minute).

I have a Brother HL-3170CBW I am not sure what all kinds of fancy things it does but it prints well and color comes out really good. I use it when I work at home and I also use it to print color labels for my home made bacon packages and it does a great job. I have had it for 5+years, time seems to fly by lately, probably more like 7+ years, never a problem.

All printers are going to be cheap. Check out the prices of the replacement cartridges for them.

Mine are a bit spendy but last a long while. Also, with many Brother printers, they will tell you they are empty. My best guess is they are actually at 25%. I can typically take mine out, shake them down and get more time out of them. I will print with them until they will not. LOL!!

There are hacks online to reset the cartridge low indicator, which you have to do when you put new ones in anyway so good thing to learn.

They've changed the model numbers from when I bought mine a few years ago.

I'd look for something like this, refurbished.

Brothers are solid, no-nonsense machines, and I've found they last good a long time. I have at least one that is over a decade old and working fine. Spending the extra $100 for a MFC (multifunction copier) to get the color, copy/scan/fax, two-sided, and good sheet feeder is worth it. I used to open the toner cartridges and refill them, worked fine, but don't know if that is still possible. Third-party toner cartridges are available.

We work out of the house and I just replaced our 12 year old Dell Multifunction/double side color laser. We bought a similar Xerox Workcenter 6515. Easiest setup for scanner to NAS ever. Very good color printing. It was about $650 from Dell.

I just bought a printer two weeks ago....Ended up with the 2395 mentioned above

Don't be surprised if local stores have low stock. Two Staples near me had almost nothing in stock... everything was a few days out for store pick up

The local Microcenter was the same. Little or no stock..

I finally found a Staples that had the printer, but it was almost an hour drive ( which n LI is really nothing LOL)

I've had the same Brother HL-2140 laser printer for fifteen or more years. Sounds crazy, but why replace (upgrade  ) when it works very well. I don't print huge amounts so I buy a Brother brand toner every couple of years and It keeps on going and going.

When I was a computer tech I used to buy Brother branded toners for the canon and HP printers. Cheaper and the same or better quality.

I've been using Brother MFCs for 20 years and they are a workhorse! The latest is a factory refurb that was on Amazon for I think $129. Free shipping with Prime. This was just before Covid hit last year and after that, none to be found because of WFH.

Most home-small office laser printers will work for your needs. I have a Dell printer that is the typical small office unit that is a scanner-copier-fax-and printer. The copier is handy a few times per year. The fax it mostly pointless.

One thing I had to have is the built in Apple Print. If you have a iPhone or iPad it is easy to just print right from the phone.

The thing that is most astonishing is a set of toner cartridges is two black, and one each of the Cyan, Magenta and Yellow cartridges. They cost a whoping 30 bucks for the set, and can sit in the closet waiting for the old one to get used up. They never "dry out" as they are a powder to start with.

Check the cost of a toner set for any printer you want. I would really recommend a color laser printer. It makes a really decent color print on plan ol bond paper and a nice print on "photo paper"

I make a few prints per year and it sure is handy. And darn cheap.

My printer is several years old and not sold anymore, but the newer ones are likely cheaper and faster.

rfuerst911sc 10-30-2021 07:32 AM

One of the attractions of a laser printer for me is the ability of it to work after sitting idle for months . Have owned several ink jet printers and will never again . Yes toner cartridge availability/cost will be a consideration .
