A/T tires ... Noisy?
The other thread about tires got me thinking that I needed some guidance.
We have a fleet of Land Rovers at our house and the old lady's LR4 aka Discovery 4 will be needing some new boots soon. I swear the last set is about gone at 18 months. Unfortunately, the thing has a size (255-55-19) that doesn't have too many options like some other sizes. Maybe 15 or fewer and that includes a couple of snow tire options. We've been using highway type tires but I'm considering All Terrain tires. Specifically Continental Terrain Contact, Yokohama Geolander AT G015, BFG Trail Terrain TA, or Falken Wildpeak A/T trail. Does anyone have experience with any of these? How does the noise level differ if at all from highway tires? I can't justify buying tires every 18 months so I need to get this right. |
I had a set of the Yokos you mention. They're rather un-aggressive for any real off road use, but their tread design made for a very quiet ride on my Lexus GX.
I found Goodrich KO2s to be remarkably quiet for a good off-road tire with a tread design much more in keeping with that activity than the Yokos, but it doesn't look as if they're made in the size you need. Good luck! _ |
I have the geolanders on the one ton.
Funny they are quieter on the highway than lower speeds and noisier on hardpack snow than bare pavement. Only had them on for a few weeks but so far so good. Agree with the not aggressive enough for real off road work but fine for my pavement princess. |
I chose the Pirelli Scorpion AT+ for my 4Runner, went larger than stock which increases tire selection. It's been an amazing tire so far, minimal noise, great dry performance, very capable off-road, and are snowflake rated.

I have Falken Wildpeak ATs on my 2014 Tacoma. The road noise is not bad and better than the Hancook Dynas I have on the 4Runner

Just shoed my wife’s LR4 with Conti Terrain Contact AT. Very well mannered/quiet (the tires).
My Ranger has Hankook Dynapro ATM. I use it to commute 80 miles per day on highway with no complaints. |
I feel that every all terrain knobby tire get worse with use
They start wearing unevenly in the front of the knobs where they work harder stopping. Rotation in X pattern helps. But they get noisier and noisier. There is a point where I just get new ones |

Truth. My truck has so much drone. The tires don't bother me. But they're noisy for sure. |
I like the look of the AT’s, but a lot of my driving is highway, so a quiet ride was high on my list. My Michelin LTXs were great and I’ll have to see how the new Goodyear GT2’s work.

I've run my BF Goodrich All Terrain KO2 tyres for 100k miles, work great on all surfaces
Not noticeably loud on the highway, even when I do 1000 mile/20hr drives across Europe in my old 1994 Toyota 4Runner |
Well, one of the guys I hung out with on occasion could tell you what mud tires were on a truck by the sound. When I switched from ground hawgs to Super Swampers, he didn't even come out of the garage, yet when I came in, he told me what I switched too.

I wouldn't recommend the KO2's for a car you like having a discussion in. We put them on my son's Rav4 and the road noise is definitely noticeable but the RAV isn't the best vehicle for sound deadening. My Grabber ATX's are quieter than the KO2's.

I had a version of the Falken Wildpeak At that came on my Gladiator stock. They were pretty quiet but they were also heavy. The K02's that I have on now are light years more quiet than the Falkens and they weigh less.

I have 17 inch Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo tires on my Tahoe. They're my winter tires. I don't find them noisy.
Years ago I had BFG All Terrain tires on my old K5 blazer. Good tires not to an aggressive tread and from what I remember not very noisy and great in snow. This was in 1998. |
Just a thought but if you expand your search to 245 or 265 you might have more options I dont know. I highly recommend general grabber or yokohama geolander had them both on my trucks and they were great
