Vic Elford
I salute you.
Wow. While these things are inevitable, it's still always a little sad when these great racers pass away. RIP, Quick Vic.
Seen Vic race at Nurburgring and Silverstone Circuit. 1970-1977
how sad. what a great talent & a fine gentleman. loved racing Porsches so much he wrote a classic book about how to drive one... quick, fast & exacting. always approachable at events & a treat to talk with about those days, cars, fellow competitors and his own exploits. that chase @ the Targa ... one of the greatest drives of all time. may he set a record getting past St Peter at the Pearly Finish Line.
Vic was in the room next door to mine once at a hotel. We rode down the elevator to a group chat about his driving days. He was a fascinating speaker and talks about many of the great cars he drove. Very nice guy.

Vic Elford 917 Ace...
An expert form this article sums Vic up well. "In May (1968) he scored a win that he would later select as the race of his life. After losing around 18 minutes thanks to a lost wheel and a puncture, Elford pulverised the Targa Florio lap record to win, sharing a 907 with Umberto Maglioli. He was one of the best. God Speed VE! |
Saw him speak once - humble, down to earth guy with stories that kept you at the edge of your seat for hours on end...
Goodbye Quick Vic: may you always hit that perfect apex turn after turn, lap after lap, in the great racetrack up in the heavens... |
RIP Mr. Elford.
Very nice guy. I visited him at home on a couple of occasions and had him as my Skip Barber instructor decades ago. He will be missed.
RIP. I enjoyed his book "Porsche High-Performance Driving Handbook"
He spoke at an NNJR meeting several years ago. I'm glad I got to see and hear him in person. It's not often you get to meet your heroes.
Awww man. Yes, I bought his book too. Always remembered his comment about seating position being al low as possible.
One of the legends. RIP. |
One of the greats of a glorious era....
