Control Group

I remember when I was a kid, there was skunk roaming around during daylight. Animal control people came out and shot it.

Get off my lawn!
|
We started smelling a skunk regularly, just a slight whiff, but there is no good level of skunk stink. Our male dachshund was sprayed twice, and that is not much fun to bath a stinky dog, and suffer the stink. We saw a skunk disappear over by a neighborhood flower garden area. Some investigation found a burrow. Crap. So we called a skunk trapper. He came out and said yep, that is a skunk den, likely a mom with babies. Triple crap.
So he set up a trap, and said he asked us to look to see if we caught anything and to call him if the trap is sprung. Sure enough, the mom was caught first. Then he caught 5 pups. I used my borescope to investigate after he said that was all. Sure enough, it was empty, so we filled it up with dirt, and a poured in a bag of quickcrete to make sure the next skunk did not find a ready made den. I asked what he did with the skunks. He said no one at all wants a skunk. There is no place to dump them that is not someones property, and it is illegal to release them anywhere but where he trapped them. So he uses nitrogen to gas them and euthanize them. They almost always just fall into nitrogen narcosis and go off to dream land. Quick and painless and humane. He then buries them on his ranch.
