IDK on Walmart meat but Costco, even the good stuff, is allegedly perforated/penetrated/injected to plump up the weight and make it "moister". That's both a $$ and a food safety issue for me. I don't want to pay for salt water and I don't want holes in my meat to push the germs in.

We don't have one locally (sadly) but I love the place in ABQ where the old guy behind the counter, and with big cow parts hanging on the other side of the window, quizzes you when you buy a roast - as in "do you know what you're doing with my meat?" "Are you going to treat it properly?". Exact opposite-world of walmart/costco and it's glorious.

Do not buy Walmart meat. I purchased some at the beginning of the coof to help load up a freezer for just in case. Put a 2 pack of ribeyes up against a high end ribeye from a meat counter I typically buy from, just looks wrong, really wrong. Same with ground beef, strips, etc... Would work for desperate times. Not to mention taste.
Best yet, get a freezer and buy a quarter or more local. I have a half coming July. There is no comparison. Fresh, locally finished, grain or grass. I purchased a quarter 2 months ago for just a tad over $500.00. A lot cheaper as well. The half is gonna run around $1100.00-$1200.00 and will be amazing. I got to look at em about 5 weeks ago. Yep, they are on a special diet. I cannot emphasize the difference in taste.

^^^ I picked up a Tomahawk Ribeye steak last month from Walmart.
Sous Vide'd it and it was the best steak I've had.

It all depends on where your Walmart is.

My parents have bought ribeyes from Walmart that looked and tasted as good as the ribeyes I get when I get my "half of a half". We've bought filet that has been fantastic from Walmart and Sams.

We're in the sticks at the moment. Went to Walmart for various sundries and bought Wagyu beef too as we needed dinner food and it was getting late. Pretty darn good.

Forgot to mention - my recommendation at the deli is to never buy anything pre-packaged. Always buy it freshly sliced.

I know you save a little time buying it already prepared but it's not worth it.

Just my 2 cents....

Nope. Ever since I went in on 1/2 a cow with my neighbor I can’t go back to store bought meat. Buying from someone who knew the cow from birth to death tastes like what I remember as a kid. I don’t have meat so often but my kids love it.

It's getting a little difficult if you're picky. Lots of major chain meats are from Brazil/Argentina. Even if they say " Packaged in USA" or "basic premise of this idea conceived in USA" a lot of it is from Brazillions of miles away.

It's possibile that the South American meats are fine but it sure would be nice to actually know what you're buying and where it came from. Like so many things.

If you actually want some beef that ate grass and lived within a thousand miles of you - you're gonna have to go find it and pay for it. Meet the guy who meat it.

I did it one time - a last minute purchase and won't do it again.

I have bought all kinds of meat at Walmart. It is just fine for normal consumption. If I was having guests over for dinner, then I would buy at the local butcher shop.

I have a few local butchers that I go too, no reason to go to wally world for steak.
One of them we have been using since was a wee lad, the other is just down the road and you can bring your hunting game and have butchered.

i dont buy anything at Walmart. the (lack of) lighting and vibes in there just dont compel me to shop.

Meat? i do not eat much meat anymore. but when i do, i want some guy to help me pick something out, and wrap it in paper for me. butcher paper is a fantastic wick to get your coals burning. i wad it up under my chimney starter with some newsprint. phoosh!
