We get the Blue Bunny Vanilla Bean ice cream. Real sugar and cream. That said, we do make home made now and then, but it is far more expensive than $3 for a half gallon. I will look up the recipe, but it is custard style with 13 eggs, cream, half and half and sugar for 1 gallon in our old style electric where you salt the ice surrounding it. It does a great job.

Steve, you really think you can do better than Bluebell?

No. It's more about something to do with the grandsons. And we do buy our milk from a dairy down the road so we've got access to great milk/cream.

Then you need to get the manual crank setup with ice and rock-salt. We had a great time passing the system around at my Aunt and Uncle's farm. Crank until your arm gets tired, pass to the next kid. Great time with the cousins!

the kids are 3 and 6. I have to assume if they can turn it at all, they'd be tired in about 5 seconds, then it'd be my problem for the next hour. Or is it easier than I imagine?

That might be too young, and we had several cousins to pass it to...

Well Crap. I read the article and bought the cheaper Cuisinart 21 with an extra bowl...$93 total on Amazon

I have an electric 6 quart that I got as my first Father’s Day present. Been a great machine. I have played with a few different recipes, my favorites are plain vanilla, vanilla w Oreos, vanilla w about half a box of white cake mix, and a Mexican chocolate made with Abuelita Mexican Hot Chocolate.

My wife uses a plain old electric ice cream maker but she makes ice cream every few weeks. I’m spoiled!
