What? No more Ipod?

Fox business channel just reported that Apple is discontinuing the Ipod. WTF? I love just setting mine to shuffle play, plug it in the car, and go. No real replacement for that..

Sure there is, an iPhone.

It does that and even works as a phone, and a map, and email and lots of other things.

Yeah, I suspect the sales of iPods dropped years ago, and continued to decline. Now that many/most folks have smart phones (which have the same capabilities), hardly anyone wants a stand alone device.

I phone...yep, that's what I was afraid of. For many various reasons, I don't want one. Oh well...will just keep using my Ipod until it or I die.

Sony MP3

Buy a used old model iPhone, and don't get the phone activated. It will do all the things you want, just no phone calls except 911.

The Bluetooth, and WIFI will work fine, and it will run anything that the iPod did, plus a lot more. And no monthly fees.

I actually had no idea they sill made the iPod...great device, but iPhone kinda made it irrelevant.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys...guess I just find it sad that such a perfectly functioning device became obsolete... Now thinking of when Sony thought it had the portable music market sewn up with the walkman. Yep, time marches on.

Much like you can't find VHS recorders anymore. The tech is obsolete. And billions of VHS tapes are now useless.

The good new is an old outdated iPhone will work fine for that task. Asks some friends with kids or grand-kids. Someone has a old phone on a shelf that they don't want. Offer them 10 bucks for it.

And if you ever need to make a 911 call, it will do that and an iPod can't.

I use iPods to run music in the store. I'd better stock up.

I’ve never owned an iPod.

As far as that goes, I’ve never downloaded a song to any of my phones.

Every place I hang out has a good stereo system, what’s the point?

I drive my 86 El Camino, and a 85 911. Both are noisy and have a MP3 player with every one of the 120+ CDs I own ripped to play in random order.

Never a commercial, just my music. It ain't great sound, but it is music and beats the hell out of me singing in my head.

It's great when you are on a plane and not hooked to wifi. I have 13k songs on my phone....every genre imaginable (except rap).

I've got an old iPod in my car that I have tunes on. Not many but it's my list so that's fine with me.
I also have this little guy stashed in a desk drawer, and now thanks to this thread it's out and on the charger.

I also have an 8GB one, but not sure it's going to be recharged or not as it doesn't show any signs of life when plugged in.

I'm not an Apple kind of guy so no telling what will happen to them.

In other industry news;

VW will not build any cars in 2023 using beam front axles suspended by torsion bars.

Western Electric has decided the rotary dial telephone no longer suits their manufacturing or marketing needs.

Michelin and Goodyear have teamed up to quit building bias-ply tires for passenger cars.

Converse will no longer offer contracts for NBA players to wear Chuck Taylors on the court.

Wham-0 has stopped production of Lawn-Jarts

MikeSid 05-11-2022 01:46 PM

Ha! I was honestly just about to type..."Western Electric discontinued the bakelite Model 3500"

That really was a great sounding phone and I miss that clarity on phone calls.

I always thought iTunes was horrible.
Anyways, with Spotify/Pandora it all seems obsolete.

For many years, I used an iPod to listen to music while I was driving or via headphones at work. At some point, I switched to Pandora. It doesn't have all of my music, but it's got far, far more music than I have, which exposes me to new stuff. I pay $5/mo. It may not be as worth it now that I am not commuting/in my car like I used to be, but I can afford $5/mo to keep it. If I didn't, I'd have to go buy and rip a ton of stuff that I don't own.

I used to use Pandora for free. I can't remember why I started paying. It may have been due to commercials (less than the radio, but maybe some), but I'm not sure.

McLovin 05-11-2022 02:22 PM

I used Pandora free for years. It works fine, just has some commercials. Not a huge amount (although the ones they have are incredibly annoying, I think they do that on purpose!).
Then a month or so ago Pandora was down for a few hours while I was home.
I started a free Spotify account.
Wow! Much better. I like the functionality and features better.
I also wondered why I wasn’t getting any commercials on Spotify, I had just the free version, didn’t give a credit card or sign up for any free trial, etc.
I found out why the other day. After building a huge “liked song” list etc. I was suddenly hit (after about a month) one day with a ton of commercials.
I’ve gotten so used to the paid functions and no commercials that I caved and signed up for the free 3 month trial. After that I’ll have to pay. They got me, haha.
