Strane issue with my clothes washers
As far back as I can remember every washer I have owned has had the same issue. The coating on the top cover, drum, hinge area and some other laces have had the finish chip away and rust sets in and the finish soon detereriates further. I have tried white paint...no luck rust comes right back, finally used some of that sealer stuff that goofy guy hawks in info mercials and it has so done the trick. Look sort of yucky but NOT MORE Rust!
Why does that happen? Anyone else have this issue? John |
pictures?
On my washers those areas get chipped/ or shot peened bare metal. no corrosion though. Interesting... |
I think it's the acids, or more likely the alkaline, in your laundry powder. Some brands of powders are worse than others.

Same thing here around the lid edges and hinges.
I sanded, used rust conversion on a q-tip, let dry a day, an old bottle of white auto touch-up which is like a lacquer, using a small brush. They also sell small bottles of appliance paint at the box stores fwiw. It doesn't match but it slowed it down at least. |
Odd. My washer is so ancient I can’t remember when I bought it. 22 years ago? Not rusted yet.
|
This is what the dryer looks like...the washer doesn't have it.
I figured the humidity (it's in the basement) did the damage to mine. I now keep a dehumidifier down there. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1656412112.jpg |
^^^^ That's strane Steve.... very strane indeed :D!
|
^^^ lol...I figured I'd quit before someone gets po'd at me. :D

Consistency maters ;)
|
Sure, some people get a pass, others, not so much.
|
My washer is a little older than I am and she even put the cleaned clothes in the dryer and dries them and hangs them ups for me. I have to put them back in my closet myself however. No rust at all.
|
^^^ Does she get all the stranes out?
|
Is this the same type of strane when I’m trying to pass a 2 x 4?
|
^^^
It depends on the sounds....please don't include an audio or video clip. |

Detergents will do that. Wife used to put the bottle on the nearby chest freezer and the detergent leaks ate away the white coating on that and rust ensued.
Get into the 21st century (or the 20th century Europe) and buy a front loader. It does a much better job overall and no lid issues! |
As I mentioned earlier it's the Ph of the detergents you use. I used to work for Unilever in the factory where we made the stuff so It's a fairly educated opinion.
If you use a good quality normal laundry powder such as Persil you will get good results and it won't give the machine too much grief. Other ones like Vanish Napisan, which does a REALLY good job, but are very alkaline and will dissolve paint and cause corrosion. |
