Do turtles get to know you and become friendlier?

stevej37 07-13-2022 04:02 PM

^^^ Yes, they recognize me easily and will eat food out of my hand. Other people/friends..not so much.

If it's a sunny day they don't like to budge from their spot in the sun...unless they see something unfamiliar to them. If I carry a bag or pail near the pond, they are in the water fast.

It's their nature to be skittish...they never get over it.

Do you leave them in there in the winter?

stevej37 07-13-2022 05:25 PM

^^^ No..I have a 2x2x4 poly stock tank in my basement. Just before the pond freezes, I net the fish and turtles and they stay in the basement until spring.

They semi-hibernate...don't eat or move much at all until moved outdoors.

After one sunny day...they are back to normal.

My dogs also get rotisserie chicken. I tell them if they don't eat it, I'll give it to the cat. The birds end up eating it.
