Where the Crawdads Sing

Ninety percent of the books I read are non fiction.
Just interested in real stuff I guess. My wife picked up a book last week and it sat on the
coffee table untouched for a week. I picked it up just to see what it was about.
Started reading it and got wrapped up in the story. No spoilers here but it was one of the best fiction books I've read.

To any of you fiction readers, you got to read this one. A whole lot of truth about everything in a made up story.

My Wife read it and liked it. The movie was just released last month.

Author and ex-husband are still wanted for questioning in Africa concerning a murder. The book is very similar to some real life events, I hear.

"A whole lot of truth about everything in a made up story"

Sounds like all of Terry Pratchett's writing... Here's something I found posted as an screen shot of someoene elses FB page, etc. so I retyped it

"I started out reading a fantasy novel. A simple police procedural in a city far away, that straddles an old slow river.

But no, it was about ethics. It was about knowing the difference between what's allowed, what's legal, and what's right. And that fairly often those three don't line up.

Or it was about gender politics. About the first person in a society willing to step up and say "You've called me by this name, and this pronoun, all my life. But that isn't me. This is me. No, we don't even have that pronoun yet, but this is still me."

Or it was about racism. That constant social whine of "well, everybody knows what they're like." The blame game that's based on the whispered mutterings that never have a source, and always boil down to "I'm terrified because they are different. I'm terrified because when I look at them, for a second there I can see myself in their eyes and if I was wrong, then all I've said and done..."

It was about giving voices to the voiceless, and hearing how much they've been trying to say this whole time.

It was about what it means to be human.

I always start out reading a fantasy novel when it comes to Pratchett. And somehow it ends up in a moral philosophy lesson from a professor with a grasp of humanity that still leaves me astonished. "

Here are the critic reviews for the movie....
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/where_the_crawdads_sing/reviews

But that doesn't mean much to me....I would see it.

Rotten Tomatoes has the movie at 33% + critical review and 96% + audience review.

That means you should see it.

Yes, when I was younger I used to look at critic reviews of movies and assume the opposite. If the critic loved the movie, there was a good chance that I would really find little to no value in it. If the critics hated it, then I'd probably be entertained.

I've changed, and wouldn't necessarily judge like that any more. But at the same time, if I saw critics @ 33% and audiences at 96%, I would assume it was a good movie.

We often disagree, but not on this.

Unless they're within a few points of one another, I always - and I mean always - go with the audience score over that of the critics, which I pretty much dismiss out-of-hand.

I absolutely loved the book! Can't recommend it enough. Hopefully the movie holds up.

Sounds interesting, I’ll definitely put it on my list. I’m the same as OP, probably 98% of what I read is non-fiction (if I want fiction I go to PARF, lol…sorry!).

Shaun @ Tru6 08-08-2022 03:22 PM

On the subject of reviews, I read online (where everything is true) that the smaller, less established critics and media sources many times have to tow the line for a movie, or rather the production company. Panning a film may get you disinvited to early releases, parties, openings, whathaveyou. So smaller up and coming critics have to remain in good graces with production companies.

cmccuist 08-08-2022 08:33 PM

They just write a good review or they want get to go to parties? That sounds like some car magazines and electronics magazines.

Can’t trust anybody these days.

Great book, I read it a few years back after my wife's very positive review.

The wife & I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago & enjoued it very much. I recommended it on the movie thread.

stevej37 09-12-2022 05:38 PM

Saw it...was ok, but it could have been much better. The boyfriend stuff was as expected.
I will read the book and hope it's better.

Chick Flick.

Watched it with the Mrs the other night. Not too bad. Well worth a look.

I'm pretty sure critic reviews are yes or no. Their cumulative rating often becomes misleading.

Audience rating is "analog".

Shaun @ Tru6 09-13-2022 05:09 AM

I like that Bob.
