Hearing aids
I have to be honest with myself, I think it'll soon be time for a hearing aid and I'm having a hard time justifying the $5000 or so entrance fee. I realize they are getting more sophisticated but gee wiz, how do they justify those prices?
Anyway, my question is have any of you bought a hearing aid other than from an audiologist? There is quite a selection on Amazon at reasonable prices but do they do an OK Job? Thx hughc |
I bought hearing aids from Costco. $1,500. They have blue tooth and can take phone call through them. After two years with them I am 80% happy with them. There is interference during phone calls sometimes.

I've been wearing them for years and one of the benefits of using a specialist is the follow up and maintenance.

Thanks guys,
I found the original thread. Lots of helpful comments there. |
For the record, they just passed a new law allowing retail sales of hearing aids. You will soon be able to just walk in a store and buy them. No testing or exams required. This should open things up and bring prices down.

I have had them since February. It is amazing what I was missing. I am very happy to have them, and they were over $1800. Well worth it in my book !

Well I did a search for hearing aids and this is what I came up with. About four months ago I started buying Audious hearing aids on line. About $100 US for each one . Am on my third one now. Seems adequate but could readily fall out of the ear though.
Two days ago I went to Costco and got a hearing test. Moderate to severe hearing loss. The gal was pleasant but turned into a pressure seller saying it is $1200 for a Phillips hearing aid but the price goes up on November 23 to $1500 cdn. Are Costco hearing aids really that good? Have any of you been satisfied with the online producsts? Thanks in advance, Guy |
My Mom has them from Miracle Ear and they work great.
The local Miracle Ear shop here is fantastic regarding service. Free checkups and tuneups and even repairs. They have some very sophisticated diagnostic equipment too. I know they weren't cheap but sometimes you get what you pay for. |
I went to the eye Dr. in Walmart this week. They also sell hearing aids now.

This is intended to make hearing aids much more affordable. Of course, there will be side effects but on the whole, it could help most people.

Those in the US - keep in mind - the new law will open the market for cheaper options - but it will be for "generic" aids - not likely those customized/filtered for your specific hearing loss needs. |

I go to the Walmart in Port Orange for my vision needs. Mostly the required checkup to buy contacts. Always had great service there. That's good to know about the hearing part. Maybe they have had that at mine too but at a different part of the store I didn't notice. I will check out though. I don't wear them but always interested in who gives good service. |
I did go to an audiologist. I got a great set of hearing aids, plus the they set them up and tuned them exactly to my loss levels. I got free maintenance and replacement on them too !

I might re-look into getting them.
I had a hearing aid about 30 years ago but I didn't like it. It looked like a bit of bubble gum stuffed in yer ear. One or two friends have them and it looks like a small wire going from the back of the ear into the ear. I'm guessing they have improved over the last 30 years. |

How did you get to be so deaf, and I'm guessing the hearing aid helps a lot? Is the hearing aid just louder or does it enhance certain tones? |
Genetic defect is the original cause. Botched surgery finished off the right ear when I was 16. The aid is louder but it also can improve different frequencies and louder is also clearer. It sucks that I have no directional hearing. Every sound is on my left.
