When I was a much, much younger man, there was an outlet store in town called C.O.M.B. I don't remember what that stood for, but they would have tools, including tubs and tubs of Easco sockets. Easco made Craftsman sockets among other things, so they were about the same quality as Craftsman, and only $0.25 each. I picked through and bought one or two of the sockets I used the most at the time, I still have some of them today.

If I had a crystal ball, I would have bought up all the 10mm sockets, and sold them off a little at a time. I wouldn't have had to work.

LOL on the 10mm...

When I compare tool prices of today with those of even 15-20 years ago, I shudder. As I've posted here before, glad I loaded up on the USA made Craftsman when I did. That's the vast majority of my sockets collection.

Harbor Freight? There's where it gets confusing...seems they offer several lines of different quality. The lowest price line is junky made in China stuff, the middle line a mix of China and Taiwan, and the top line is supposed to be good, made in Taiwan, but also priced the same as other Taiwan brands.

I've still got almost every piece of the Craftsman tool set that I got for Christmas when I was 16.
I did exchange the 3/8 ratchet after it wore out - that was about 20 years ago, and I think it was replaced with a US made one. Ratchets, sockets in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive -as well as metric and standard open end wrenches. I've added to it substantially over the years - not just with Craftsman, but also Snap On, Mac, Gearwrench and other makes -including some Harbor Freight.

Unless half of them are 10mm, not interested. :D

Got this Craftsman set about 30 or 40 years ago at Sears for about $29 bucks or something. 10mm still present and accounted for.

Fond memories. Here's a youtube I found of various sockets being tested for rockwell hardness. One tested was an old USA made Craftsman. He even mentioned it being one reason Craftsman was so popular. Funny in a way..we took them for granted and they just worked well. Today? People out there scouring garage & estate sales looking for old USA made Craftsman tools. Even though my current age prevents me from doing the wrenching I once did, the rollaway and it's (mostly Craftsman) tools will remain until I croak.

Huh? All I see on the video is rockwell harness testing of sockets...dunno what a tl;dr is. Snap on was the hardest...up to you if worth the price. I'm sure not tossing my old made in USA craftsman.

Interesting information but what makes Snap-on sockets and wrenches so special is not just the quality of the steel but the precision of the tool; i.e. 10mm is really 10mm. I own a ton of different brands and for a lot of jobs, the lesser tools are, "close enough," but if you have a fastener that is really tight and maybe a little rounded from someone else trying to get it off and you only have *one shot* at it, the Snap-on or MAC or Hazet will really pay for itself.
