Dry January

Anyone else participating?
This is a first for me. I usually get home from work and have a couple glasses of wine. Sometimes more.
It has not been too bad. The first couple of nights were the worst. Mainly because it was routine.

berettafan 01-12-2023 07:06 AM

i'm willing to try but haven't seen any specifics on which day in January.

flatbutt 01-12-2023 07:23 AM

Too late.

URY914 01-12-2023 07:43 AM

I thought this was going to be about the weather.

Danimal16 01-12-2023 08:12 AM

Dan, I had not planned on going dry for January, but things seem to be working out that way. I have had two glasses of wine this whole month. I admit I feel better and have some physical benefits. Like I said, didn't plan it, but what the heck. (though and old friend is visiting this weekend and she like champagne.)

stealthn 01-12-2023 12:07 PM

Yup, on it

I am trying to lose weight and red wine is my kryptonite so I figured I’d give it a go until my anniversary on the 29th.

No problem

I've been dry for almost two years now after abusing alcohol for the last 15 years. I was a high functioning alcoholic and of course I was in denial - it was just a hobby. Took inspiration from an unlikely source to make me realize. I've lost 95 pounds and couldn't be happier!

Bill Douglas 01-12-2023 12:51 PM

No thanks. I'll wait until Dry July and then take a day off drinking.

javadog 01-12-2023 12:56 PM

January has been pretty dry here, I may have to run the lawn sprinklers in the coming days. I was hoping to avoid that.

Didn’t realize no drinking in January was a thing. I haven’t had anything in a while, mainly because I don’t have any beer in the fridge and no wine, either. I do have some tequila in the freezer but it’s not really margarita season yet.

I never liked alcohol much...or wine.
But I really like the taste of a good beer. I'm afraid if I quit drinking beer I might lose 95lbs also. Then I would weigh 55 pounds. :)

I started the day after Christmas.

No sugar / no alcohol for 30 days.

It is sort of a pain in the rear. I did the same in September. It was harder then.

I consume WAY too much sugar and alcohol apparently converts to sugar in your body. So I kicked it for a month.

Interesting. I do drink a glass or two of red wine every other night or so. I thought the alcohol would be tough. It really isn't. The sugar is more difficult.

But, last time I did this, I thought I was happier. This time I have lost 7 pounds so far in 2.5 weeks!

Not really enjoying myself but I think my body appreciates it. And what is odd? EVERYONE I speak with confesses to eating too much sugar. It is universal.

Dry January? My bottle of Blanton's says otherwise and just picked up a nice Chateauneuf-du-Pape for some forthcoming cassoulet.

javadog 01-12-2023 02:47 PM

Cassoulet!

I make one every winter, haven’t done it yet.

It's been a year and a half since I stopped eating sugar. No deserts, cakes, muffins or chocolate biscuits.

I don't feel any different but I sure enjoy not having that sugar crash feeling after gorging on sweets then rolling off the couch onto the floor :(

I was just talking to a guy I've known since the 60s last night and suggested we should get together for a beer. He responded he doesn't drink anything anymore. He said since he got so old, drinnking made him feel so bad, he gave it up totally. I guess if you wait long enough, the problem takes care of itself.

I just got back from the gym and I'm having a shot of bourbon before dinner :)

I'm moderate in my intake of alcohol and don't feel the need to avoid it for a month.

For those of you choosing to go dry, more power to you!

Shaun @ Tru6 01-12-2023 05:29 PM

My problem is I don't drink enough, I'm a pretty cheap date. One Old Fashioned, Sidecar or a generous single glass pour of cabernet or Chimay, and I'm done. Two of any of those and I'm not going anywhere.

wdfifteen 01-12-2023 05:53 PM

I need a reward for making it through the day. A martini before dinner and a glass of wine with the meal and I feel like it was all worth it.

Done it for 20 years.

Feb. 30th ..... that's when I give up all my "vices that are now habits"!

That's my advice ;)

Same here. Rather than Dry January, we call it Low Carbuary. It includes no alcohol, but as mentioned above, the reduced sugar is much more difficult. The transition from not eating bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, etc. takes me about 3 to 4 days of always feeling hungry, before my bodies sugar levels out. Now it's just a matter of keeping it up until the end of January. I'll typically lose about 10 to 15 lbs during the month - and I generally feel much better and sleep much better.

Wife, kids and I go to the gym every night. When we get home, I make a protein shake for my son and I, and the wife pours herself a glass of wine or cracks open a beer. Says she's earned it. :D

Good for those of you that are permanently dry. That is awesome!
This has been good for me. I have an expensive wine habit. Probably good to give the ol liver a break too. :) Who knows, I may wait until my birthday in February (23rd) to crack open a bottle of wine. That'll be happy 62 to me. ;)

This thread is such a clever way to get bottles of wine for your birthday, and thoughtful too, giving us all time to find the right ones for you. Do you want them sent to your home or the RMG shop? :D

Hey Walter_M!

I haven't kicked the carbs all out like you. How tough is that? I power down anything as long as it isn't sugar. So, bread is included. I would like to hear about how this is? It sounds very challenging- but also beneficial.

I've done this low carb (Keto) diet in January for about 4 years straight. The first time I did it, the difficulty was finding recipes, but now, I have a lot of recipes and some are good enough to incorporate all year long.

I typically lose about 1/2 lb per day without increasing my activity level. I am normally pretty active, and I think I eat pretty healthy, but it's always surprising how much I depend on all the extra carbs such as bread, potatoes, rice, or pasta. Getting my sugar under control and evened out during the day is a much better way to live - I just need to find a way to incorporate more of this into my everyday life. I'm weak when it comes to temptation.
