Paint for Kitchen Tile?
 

So, anyone here have have experience with painting tile? In our kitchen my wife wants to modernize the color. Seems there are endless choices. She has "0" patience so essentially looking for minimal prep, then mask and paint.

Advice from the PPOT brain trust........

Painting ceramic tiles can be done but the process is not what I would call easy or simple.

Is replacing the tiles an option?

We had an aluminum looking tile backsplash in our kitchen. It was ugly. Ms Rocket went to Sherwin Williams and asked them what she could use to paint the backsplash and it turned out great.

930 - do remember the products? We have a Sherwin Williams store near us

It's all about the primer.

I don’t. The guys at Sherwin Williams told Ms. Rocket what to buy and how to use it. I would swing by and see what they say.

You will lose the contrast between the grout and tile even if the same color. The grout will be shiny like the tiles and will look like something from a gas station restroom.

I've seen this done many times....

Gonna agree with Milt on this. I've done it for a couple of my customers. I think it looks horrible.

AL stamped tiles I would agree. Ceramic, no.

Without pics, we are skeptical. This is a bit like painting a brick house.

We bought a house years ago where the PO had painted the kitchen tile black. We scraped it all off w/ a razorblade, which was a several month project, a little at a time. I wish I knew what they used to paint it, b/c that's what you want to use...it was difficult to remove, even from smooth gloss glazed traditional 4x4 tiles.

Ended up being that the color underneath was good, but there were occasional brown tiles interspersed. Was able to chisel out the 10-15 brown tiles and replace them w/ something else. Looked good in the end. Back when my wife and I had more time than money. Today I would just rip it out and write the check for the redo LOL.

Tiling is not hard, it’s a reasonable DIY job, especially if you keep it simple. I’d tear out and replace with what she really wants. Which gives you the option of going for different tile size/shape, other materials, etc.

Check with a good tile store for a mastic or cement that you can use to apply new tile over the existing tile . It's not that hard of a DIY project and looks better than paint IMHO .

My in-laws had a house they had for many years as they were finally just sick of the pink and green tile and tub. They had it sprayed with an Epoxy and it sealed everything to a solid white. Like Milt said, it looked like a commercial bathroom, but it was much easier to clean.

For a kitchen tile, I am glad I don't have to make that decision or do that work. My wife decided we needed new countertops and backsplash, but she hired a real pro to do the granite countertops and new backsplash and "while we are in there" to replace the kitchen sink and garbage disposal. He then went on to do both bathrooms in the house and the laundry room. He was a master craftsman, and knew his job well. I don't have that skill set at all.
