Motor oil cans that you punctured with a spout .

Extracting cassettes from the player and getting the tape back into them.
Tapping a public phone to save 10 cents. Young kids says "Duh, why didn't you just call them on yer mobile?" When you are travelling and looking forward to news from home so you go to the central post office to ask if there is any Poste Restante mail for you. |

Real M-80s :) |
Huge Sunday newspapers with a 4-or 8-page insert of funnies in color.

The canning season. Corn, Peas, Beans, Peaches, Rhubarb, Apples, Cherries; Jams, Jellies, Marmalade, all of it had to be 'put up' for the winter and it was a LOT of work.

Scary thing is --I remember almost everything you guys are dredging up.
How about the guy with the cart who sharpened knives going through the neighborhood? Old Chicago standby. 2 cents to return a pop bottle --5 cents for a quart. Milk in gallon glass jugs. Cheap candy --like 5 cent candy bars -candy cigs, lips, dots on a paper strip. Penny gumballs |
As my grandparents house they had a milkman. The back door was never locked, he just walked in, put the milk, butter or cream in the fridge, and picked up the empties. Grandma would have a note stuck in the neck of one bottle to indicate what she needed for the next delivery.
They also had Frank, the egg delivery man. He to just walked in, and filled up the egg bin with farm fresh eggs and left a receipt. Both grandmothers shopped at Kamp's grocery store. Just pick up what you need, the check out lady was friendly greeted he by her name, and asked about the family, and she went to the same church. No ID needed, no cash or check exchanged, it was just put on the account and they paid monthly what was due. |
Actually trying and getting string and cans to work as a phone.

Merthiolate is the same as Thimerosol, which is the mercury containing preservative they put in vaccines, also used as antiseptic. Has mercury and sulfur in it I think.
Mercurochrome has mercury and bromine in it, color comes from bromine I think. You can still get this stuff in Mexico, but it is too toxic to sell to Americans Unless it is incorporated into a medication, then all is jake. I am allergic to thimerosol. Quote:

Sometimes I drink a lot of milk and sometimes none. Plus it would require space for an insulated box. |
Dial telephones? Not only did we have telephones with cranks, but our house had the switchboard. The local school had grades primary to 6 in one room. Dad kept a few dairy cows and they we delivered raw milk to our regular customers after supper each evening. 25 cents/ quart. There were a couple of Jersey cows in the herd and the cream on the top would be about an inch and a half thick.

After all that work and money I threw at my suspension and power in the 911 I took my 12 YO grandson for a spirited drive. I was sure that I had impressed him. I asked him what's the coolest thing about this car? He said the roll up windows.

WE ARE A GENERATION THAT WILL NEVER COME BACK.
A generation that walked to school and then walked back. A generation that did their homework alone to get out asap to play in the street. A generation that spent all their free time in the streets with their Friends. A generation that played hide and seek when dark. A generation that made mud cakes. A generation that collected sports cards. A generation that found, collected, and washed & Returned empty pop bottles to the local grocery store for 5 cents each, then bought a Mountain Dew and a candy bar with the money. A generation that made paper toys with their bare hands. A generation who bought vinyl albums to play on record players. A generation that collected photos and albums of clippings of their life experiences as a Kid. A generation that played board games and cards on rainy days. A generation whose TV went off at midnight after playing the National Anthem. A generation that had parents who were there. A generation that laughed under the covers in bed so parents didn't know we were still awake. A generation that is passing and unfortunately it will never return no matter how hard we try. I loved growing up when I did. It was the best of times. |
It was more the fortunate choice of parents than when it happened B.
