Read this regarding wetwood:

In reality, there are no active measures to effectively treat the bole rot caused by slime flux disease. As determined by Dr. Alex Shigo's research, the best current advice is to maintain the tree's overall health so that the tree can isolate the spot and grow good wood around the diseased portion. Affected trees will usually overcome the problem themselves and seal off the damage.

The affected bark isn’t very wet and there’s no odor to speak of.

I had 2 arborists give a clean bill of health to the maple tree on my front lawn.
Then it fell on my house.
I'd remove it.

Yikes! There are probably 100 trees that are within reach of my house…and every house in this area.

It takes a fair bit for an Oak to fall over. Maples are much more prone.

Not sure how I feel about this.

My house used to be surrounded by 2 enormous trees. The oak was about 70 foot tall and was uprooted by a derecho. Narrowly missing my wife and daughter in the process.

The maple is also about 70 foot tall and towers over the house.

You either "like" that tree or you don't. If you don't have it removed.

Not a matter of “like”. A matter of $8k to remove (requires a crane as there is no access for any equipment near the trunk and it leans over the house, as do several other trees). We live in a jungle. If it’s a healthy oak, I see no reason to remove it. Easily a 70 year old tree.

Will likely never know if this helps or not, but just installed shields. They seem to do a good job of deflecting away from the tree. Sorry for lousy pics…pouring rain right now. Note in the first pic, another mature red oak just a few feet away with perfect bark. Called the Ag center but closed for Juneteenth. Left a message.

Yes, we have wind damage coverage as we are in a coastal area. We pay a lot!

Hypoxylon Canker Is what it looks like to me, it’s a fungul disease.

I've hear the root system is usually about the same size as the spread of the tree.
(I removed several Siberian Elm trash trees about that close first thing when I bought this house.)

Located on the uphill side, the trees probably absorb a lot of water on that side. A good thing.

This elevates to pro-level IMO.

Here’s what I got back from the extension center arborist:

Mike, my name is Joel Potter, I am a Regional Extension Agent and have been forwarded some pictures of your oak tree. I tried giving you a call, but did not get an answer. While I do believe a pathogen is at work on the tree, if you are not seeing other symptoms like a weak canopy or dieback in the canopy I wouldn't be too concerned. It looks like there is some wound response wood on the edges, which indicates to me that the tree is responding to whatever is going on there and likely has good vigor. My guess as to what is going on is that there was a wound on that side of the tree at some time in the past. Before the tree had sealed up the wound, a pathogen was likely introduced, which over time has caused the deformity. It could also be the result of some type of canker. Either way, the tree seems to be responding to it and without other symptoms it likely isn't a big concern. One thing I would be interested in would be looking for any signs of decay behind the deformity. I use a 2lb rubber mallet to sound on the trunk of the tree and listen for sound wood vs hollow sounding wood.

My next door neighbor was a county extension agent. (he died several years ago)
If he didn't have the answer...he sure knew where to go to find it.

No missing bark patches. Sealed and recovered. Good bark. Have them check it.
Tree looks good.

Given 3' from the foundation would be my only concern if there is a basement to implode.
I've seen F.S. basement walls bent in a semi-circle.

Looks like a decade concern to keep note of.
