Should we eat…..

endangered species?

Hear me out here.

If we started eating endangered species and found them particularly yummy we would be encouraged to raise them as a food source thereby securing their survival.

We'd end up raising them like chicken, or Kobe beef. If I were endangered, I'd probably take a pass on a life like that.

Sorta like what they did in my hometown. There were few bears in the national park/forest and hunters wanted more. So, the state wildlife guys set aside several hundred acres as a sanctuary. Of course there is no way to keep them in the sanctuary and as the population increases, they roam farther for food (they consume massive amounts).

Eventually, there were so many that the subdivisions and city streets were teaming with them. The idiot city people think they are squirrels and want to feed and protect the creature that get up to over 800lbs. They shame the hunters and harass them so that soon, no one hunts in the area.

Soon there is a 2400% increase in numbers as they begin to breed earlier and produce more offspring (their only natural predators are man and cars). The are no longer afraid of people and chase them into their homes and kill their pets (still on the leash). After years of garbage cans being torn up, people have them in their garages...so the bears have taken to tearing open garage doors to get at it.

Now, people are starting to be really annoyed at the 300lb rats (as it is hard to come out of your house a lot of the time) ...and are complaining (but some still want to protect the poor creatures). Be careful of the long-term consequences of what you ask for.

Precisely why NJ implemented the bear hunt.

Bear is tasty. Peasants eat venison.
Yet that's what the state(s) decides one should hunt.

Shame

Yep. Video cameras caught 9 crossing my wooded, but suburban lawn in one week a couple weeks ago. Probably a few made it through unnoticed. They often are at my front door in the middle of the night. When I take the dog out at 10PM, I always expect to run into one. You cannot see them unless the light hits them (or you have special cameras as I do). You would be crucified if you shot one near the city...but I expect that to change as soon as one kills some person's child. Ther have been a lot more reports of aggressive bears in the area...but the bear advocates always blame the folks/dogs that are attacked.

I remember a few years ago when that bear stalked a student/hiker and ate him in NJ...and he captured the chase on his bear chewed cell phone. The photos were alarming for me. In fact, I posted it on Nextdoor and said we should reduce the numbers and was banned. A few years later and it seems that there are many posting there that feel the same.
