Rats or are they mice? At my in-laws, we found mouse siht behind furnitures so we cleaned it up today. They hired an outfit over a months ago but it seems the mice are much smarter then the mouse catcher. None in the traps. I then placed few traps in the attic myself, nothing. The tree trimmers broke the mesh in one of the house vents and didn't say anything. Now I think they are in the attic.

We can't buy poison in CA anymore if they are available, I am sure its environmental and rat friendly, for sure. Going to Vegas next week for a conference and I am hoping to buy some there. Anyone know if if the good stuff is still legal in NV or know of a better way to get rid of the pest?

I had rats in my attic in my house in California. When I was fixing the house to move I bought a couple rat and mice traps at the local hardware store. I baited them with a tootsie roll. I caught two big ones and a little one. Gummi bears work pretty well too.

I bated the traps with peanut butter and that what everyone had said. Nothing. Maybe they are CA vegan rats?

I like the 'walk the plank trap' in a bucket. Out in the field i can catch 4+ in a night. Never tried in the house. I've used the stick sheets for inside and they work.

I'm not a fan of chemical warfare so I try to stick to traps for rats and my line trimmer for weeds.

You have to be patient with the traps, a couple days at least. If peanut butter doesn't work try something else.

One reason to use a piece of candy is the rat has to tug at it to eat it. A rat can lick the peanut butter off the trap and live another day. I've found dead rats in my trap with half the gummi bear eaten. They knaw at it long enough to trip the spring.

"Just one bite" bait is popular here. Might give these folks a ring when in Vegas...

in my experience, glue traps work the best

Rats and mice are smart. Glue traps do work until they roll over and the rat only leaves fur, or a foot in the trap. I like the rat zappers and use trail mix with peanuts, raisins and M&Ms. You really can't get DCon in Cali?

If mice, the siht would be the size of small grains of rice. If rats, think cooked orzo.

On second thought, don't think cooked orzo. You may never enjoy avegolemon again. ;)

Snap trap with a piece of Slim Jim stuck on the prong.......gets 'em every time.

I use a trail cam also to review activity.

I think the sheets are all that's left except out and out poison, which can be problematic. Rats know to avoid traps no matter what you put in them. Juveniles excepted.

Toss a couple cats in the place.

There are companies that will actually rent you cats for this purpose.

Spread used cat litter around the perimeter of the property.

My neighbor has a recurring roof rat issue.

Told him he attracts them because they don't pick up their pocket dog poop right away, rats think dog poop is yummy. No coincidence that the area of the yard where he has the biggest problem is near the patio garbage bin where he tosses collected poop.

They don't come near my house / property because I have 5 cats.

The best bait for snap traps is blue cheese or gorgonzola. Using this, I have caught two at a time in a single trap, multiple times. Set the trap. Walk away. Listen for the snap.

I just use those simple wood base mouse traps. Have found a version with yellow plastic plate that works best.

Yes they work great until you go down to your basement late at night and step on one... ask me how I know.:rolleyes:

Had them in my garden shed. I caught a couple using old fashioned Rat Traps, with string tied to the trigger and peanut butter smeared into the string so they would chew on and pull the string to make it harder for them to steal the bait. I heard they didn't like light, so I started leaving the light on in the shed. So far no more rats

Interesting to see the various cheeses people are using to entice the rodents. Ive had good luck with Bleu d'Auvergne and Burrata. They are both excellent served at room temperature. No house proud town mouse should be able to resist.

My early warning detector was in full red alert, DEFCON1 mode this morning. Our male dachshund, Reuben was circling the storage building, and there was some sort of critter under there. I was mowing the yard, but when I finished I planned to set some traps, assuming it was mice.

He has helped find and kill a few of them.

This time I am thinking it was Bugs Bunny. As I was mowing along the edges of the storage building, he took off to the west part of the yard, nose to the ground, sent trailing. I think the sound of the mower was too much for Bugs, and it took off. Once Reuben figured out no more bunny to catch, he gave up and went back inside.

Reuben has actually caught and killed one dumb bunny. Reuben's does not allow any critters to share his back yard.
