Heh, I can relate, I had no idea JIS existed/just thought Japanese fasteners were poor quality as I whaled on them with a Philips impact driver - until I read So You're Telling Me That's Not a Phillips? about 4 decades too late...

Since they lost the war, JIS screws are a way for the Japanese to get a bit of revenge. A set of vessel JIS screwdrivers is $pendy, but JIS bits are available and are semi reasonably priced.

Was fixing the back deck last year. The carpenter used a bucket of leftovers making the thing. I ran into standards, Phillips, torx, hex, square and some other screw types I never identified.
