The birth of the Hot Rod

Not crazy about the narration of this one, but love some of the old pics. About 3 minutes..

Once got to meet a couple of guys who were there at the very dawn of hotrodding, Gene Winfield and Ed Iskenderian. 'Isky' is over 100 now and Gene is 96, but they were both full of life and it was great hearing their stories of how it was back in the day.

Gene & Ed with Ed's original un-restored Model-T rod that he started building in 1937

Very cool. Some give kids a hard time about messing with ricers, but they are the cheap, easy to modify cars they have access to. I'm just happy when I see a kid who has the 'bug'.

I've always been glad that Ed kept that thing all these years, and he keeps it pretty nice, too.

Fun fact; Ed was one of the first if not the first to put his logo on a white tee shirt all those years ago.

Monterey peninsula? I was a Ca Bay Area resident from ‘98 until ‘22. Many many visits to the motoring events in Carmel.

Wow! Looks like some sort of overhead valve conversion, but not Ardune...I'd love knowing more about them.

Tacked to the below deck portion of the mainmast of Stan Mott's Sailboat was a small aluminum plaque from a timing association, it's embossed lettering certified that he drove a 1932 Ford at a timed 104 MPH on one of the dry lakes. Think the year was 1948. Way cool...and proof he was there. Another now gone friend I miss. I hope that plaque remained in his family and that whoever has it recognizes it's significance.

Thanks for that, the mention of the mechanical skills the boys brought back from WW II I am sure made a major impact on the the car scene as well as the nation as well. The greatest generation which we Americans all owe a debt of gratitude.

Maxi heads were delivered with two short valve covers per side, but Ed had the cool one-piece covers that bear his name cast by a friend. After some experimentation with different intake manifolds, carburetors, and ignition systems, Ed would settle on the Edelbrock triple manifold and Vertex mag that are still on the car."

Eric Rickman, NHRA Drag Safaris that standardized classifications and safety standard started from the 50s and worked at a photographer for Hot Rod Mag. His son Just passed away couple years ago lived down the block from me. When I hear an engine roar, I know he has one of the cars out. Sometimes, I walk down to see who is making all the ruckus, polluting our air and chat for a bit. He likes the company as many of the neighbors are not car people instead, they are tree huggers. There are some very interesting cars and they come and go from his storage. He mentioned some of them belonged to his father. Most must have been donated to the Peterson now by his wife.

I have the great honor to have been befriended by "Ohio" George Montgomery. He has some great tales about the Dayton, Ohio hot rod scene in the late 40s and early 50s.
They used to have drag races down Main St. in Dayton. The studio for WING radio was in the Talbot Tower overlooking Main St. WING used to do play-by-play for the drag races in between popular music (there wasn't any Rock N Roll yet). It got to be such a big deal the police finally closed the street for a few hours on Saturday nights for the races.
