Shooting on Chapel Hill campus....
Hard for me to process .... one faculty member dead. This campus has been part of my "stomping grounds" for 50 years, though I didn't attend school there. My first football game was UNC verses VMI as a 10 year old.... road trips there when my school played them, MJ & Worthy's championship celebration on Franklin St. with 30K others, and then living & working nearby after college. More music shows at the Cat's Cradle (both on Franklin St. and down the road in Carrboro) to count.
Shattered ... Nearby Duke & NC State will be too .... I feel so bad for the kids .... They will NEVER think of Chapel Hill like the rest of have our whole lives. I just needed to vent .... this just sux :( |

I hear ya, KC.
That ******* who shot up MSU campus last year made irreversible damage. He crushed a whole lotta people. |
Sad news KC. Yes certain places are happy places or safe places. And where you spend your influential years should be one of them.

^^^^ Thanks! First I've seen of the POS. The campus was on lockdown for about 3.5 hours.... thousands of freshman on their 2nd day of classes... still kids really...
And today they aren't the same :( |
i think the public message on this, the picture and attitude the kids are given, needs to be 'ok this guy was an ******* now let's get back to good living and take this as a reminder that diligence and effort are necessary for an orderly society'. I'm starting to suspect this 'oh these poor people are marred for life' is more of a self fulfilling prophecy than an observation.
now go be strong and kick some ass! |
^^^^ You are correct. But I remember what it was like as a freshman on a large campus just starting out .... the upper classmen are handling it "differently". The thousands of freshmen are ???.
Of course they'll "carry on" .... but the innocence of being on that campus is now gone :(. |
Chinese lab drama.
3rd year grad student killed his advisor. Prolly for blocking his way to Ph.D.. |

I think your image of an innocent freshman is an illusion. All their lives they have heard of or experienced shootings in elementary and high schools. Don't you think this culture in which they have grown up has taken away the rose colored glasses?
I usually try to avoid a cynical tone, but come on guys. They have been experiencing this all their brief lives. We, who grew up with this sort of thing as an anomaly are missing our youth. Not the best Les |
If the loss of innocence is defined as realisation that horrible things can and do happen i'd say the COVID response our idiots forced upon us all is for certain when their innocence went up in smoke.
|
I have a loose connection with that pi.
The grad student lost both parents to covid and was not able to go back to the ccp for the funerals (from Wuhan). From a poor family. Motive still unknown, but looks like he did not have much to live for. This has concerned my department. Imo don't treat your grad students as cheap (slave) labor, don't shelf them on their work to publications, and let them graduate if they're getting good impact factor publications. |
