Moisturizer

Who uses it, what kind do you like?

I tried this stuff for potters, whose hands are dried out with clay all the time, called “Gloves in a Bottle”, it seemed good. Tonight a cosmetologist friend recommended olive oil, as used by Sophia Loren. Her theory (my friend’s) was that you don’t want to use anything you wouldn’t eat, since it is absorbed into your skin and then bloodstream.

Not moisturiser as such but I'm obsessive about using sunscreen. Works the same. Stops the skin around your finger nails splitting and hurting.

If I'm painting a ceiling or something like that I put sunscreen on my face and the paint falls of with a wash.

Toxic sure, but sister got a melanoma and we grew up at the same beach...

Eucerine Intensive Repair, and Gold Bond Healing are excellent as they do what they're supposed to do without leaving your hands slimy and slippery. "Lotions" usually contain mineral oil and that leaves your hands oily and useless. "Cremes" generally do not contain mineral oil, using glycerine or similar instead, which dry on the skin faster and typically don't leave a sticky or slippery residue. There is a caveat with the Eucerine in that it will increase your susceptibility to sunburn, though I have not noticed that as a particular problem.

Bag Balm for my feet on the days I am out and about camping wearing only flip flops around the camp site. Same for those dry winter days when the skin splits open. Over night, they start to heal and no pain.

Notes from some reading
- glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and urea are humectants: draw moisture from suroundings into skin
- petrolatum, silicones, and lanolin are occulsives: act as barrier to reduce moisture leaving skin
- ceramides, oils, and lipids are emolliants: oily substances that fill spaces between skin cells
- Vitamin E and Vitamin C: antioxidants that “may” help skin cells last longer or retain moisture - evidence is sparse
- moisturizer first, ideally right out of shower, then apply sunscreen which needs to be reapplied every couple hours

It is interesting to read the ingredient list of Gloves in A Bottle. https://www.glovesinabottle.com/pages/ingredients

I’m going to look for a moisturizer with lots of hylauronic acid (HA), just to try it out.

Gene's Vitamin E Cream

What exactly is the issue?

I use a product called CeraVe SA Creme for rough and bumpy skin on my feet in the winter time, and even up my legs and on dry hands.

If I am active and sweating, like mowing the yard or working on the car, my skin stays naturally moisturized for days afterwards. In winter it gets dry and the CeraVe is like magic.

Shaun @ Tru6 09-10-2023 07:40 AM

CeraVe, Lubriderm and few others in this category are very good for hands and body. For face I use

Eau Thermale Avene Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream

and

EltaMD Moisture Seal Face and Body Moisturizer for Dry Skin and Sensitive Skin

They are very expensive but worth every penny, at least for me.

jyl 09-10-2023 09:21 AM

Tobra, no specific issue to address. Just trying to keep my skin, particularly arms and hands, from drying out and being wrinkly.

I unfortunately spent a lot of time in the sun without a hint of sunscreen.

The 70’s and 80’s were hell on skin.

I started going to a dermatologist 10 years ago and he changed all my habits, from soap to SPF Infinity, hats and lotions, both basic and tailored to me.

It was worth it to me.

Hey! Best stuff to treat "mechanics hands" that I ever found.

Evans, Marv 09-10-2023 11:36 AM

I've spent my amount of time in the sun also. A few years ago, I noticed I was getting "age spots" on my forearms and asked my derrmatologist about them. He recommended Amlactin. It really had a positive effect, so I put it on my arms, face, & neck after shaving in hopes of looking a bit younger. I haven't noticed any improvement in the looks, but it seems to be a really affective moisturizing lotion that reduces age spots. For lips, hands, & feet, it's Bag Balm.

Well, I need to grow more man boobs to justify usage.

look 171 09-10-2023 12:21 PM

I spend a huge amount of time out in the sun for years training on my bike without any sun screen and the many hours whitewater rafting. There were trips I gone on forgetting to bring sun screen. Within a day or two, I look like a lizard and peel like an orange. Some age spots start to appear on my arm and legs.

stevej37 09-10-2023 12:22 PM

This stuff works as well as Bag Balm and smells great without the greasiness.
The Amazon link shows it is out of stock...not sure why.

Feed store, what the heck is that? :) WE would have to drive an hour or more to reach one of those places but they do sell them at Costco, I think?

I have eczema on my hands and I work in healthcare. Dry hands and constant hand washing and sanitizer can cause my hands to split open. I have tried almost everything.

My favorite moisturizers:
CeraVe
AmLactin
Aquaphor

Also, Dove makes a hand sanitizer with no alcohol in it. That seems to be easier on my hands.

My kid has eczema when he was young. We thought it was from the dry winters so we had cream, Aquaphor, on his face all the time. Later we discovered it was allergy related. Its all gone now and he out grew his allergy still, pollen kicks his butt.

Bill Douglas 09-10-2023 07:29 PM

PorscheGAL.

This stuff is amazing. Eulactol. I think it contains mainly eucalyptus tree oil, so is less chemical/toxic than most. It's heel balm but works on hands elbows, sunburnt noses LOL Certainly worth a try :)

One thing I love about the Pac NW - more half the year you’re basically living in moisturizer. Sadly, it’s getting toward less than half the year. But we’re cooling down and in a month it’ll start to rain and won’t stop until April or May. By then, of course, I’ll feel differently.

Erakad 09-10-2023 09:51 PM

Derm doc recommended CeraVe

Danimal16 09-18-2023 08:21 PM

Noxema,
Witch Hazel w/o alcohol;
Watkin's salve;
Shave with Mitchel's Wool Fat;
and for my feet, warm water and white vinegar soaks.

Noting special.

wdfifteen 09-18-2023 08:36 PM

After menopause cast it's dark shadow over our household we became fair experts in moisturizers.
Never tried "BAG BALM" though. I'm not sure that is the place you need it.

flatbutt 09-19-2023 06:32 AM

If it's just hands that need help try this. Get some cheap azz cotton gloves ( liners). Apply whatever goo you choose at bed time and sleep with the gloves on.

When I hiked poles for Ma Bell my hands were a mess. The overnight gloves fixed them up very quickly.

The can I have I have doesn't have the udder display on it like the one shown here. I'm wondering if the original formulated one is still available at ag stores.
