Best Facebook Alternative?
Any of y'all using something in place of Facebook?
Facebook started threatening to ban me, claiming my art is pornography. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695758628.jpg |
All depends on what you use the book of face for.
A proper domain name that you own can be set up to point to a hosted blog of some type (probably a wordpress instance somewhere... just don't do anything to set up taking payments, etc. or anything that you really want to be secured via wordpress, it is known terribly insecure as are many many extensions, etc. But it works fine for "I don't know HTML and need to post messages w/ some images etc"). This gets you easy image and message posting, may allow comments/replies to your top level posts. Calendar type thing for upcoming shows you'll be at, etc. You can then set up a self-selecting-into one-way list for announcements, etc. and then include references there to your blog posts. "Hey all, new blog post up with previews of some charcoal silhouettes I was working on and a show schedule for the upcoming holiday season - check it out on the blog at https://......" The one big thing here is secure the list so only you can send to it and be sure to immediately honor unsubscribe requests. |
What ^he^ said. What do you use FB for? Keeping in touch with family, reading about interests, selling your art, etc...?
That's going to determine what the answer is. |
Hmm... Perhaps I asked wrong. I was looking for firsthand experience using Vero, Mastadon, or such. I'm not looking to create a web presence. I sell my work through galleries
|
BTW, I do know HTML. I retired from a 40 year IT career. I started out slinging code, and progressed to leading a team of 28 people. The net? The last thing I want to do is *anything* with computers.

Nice one Dixie. I have yet to think of a "good thing" to use AI on.
It does save labor... But provides little value. |
Dealers I restore and repair for use Instagram. It takes a while to get followers so you have to have constant content. But that's the case with any of them.

Just show them your license. Here's mine.

All the cool kids use Instagram now.
I like Threads as well, as a Twitter alternative. |
I knew someone who sold art work on ETSY

I was once asked for my artist statement. I gave them this... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695815904.jpg |
I use Faceplant for my purposes, keeping up with real actual friends and relatives. And I scroll right past the stupid political BS or advertisements. I have stopped following a few personal friends that keep posting political BS from left or right, I don't want to see it at all.
I do NOT have it on my phone at all. I don't need anyone to know I am eating at some restaurant, or going anywhere. I post very little, and mostly just read, and lots of Happy Birthday or anniversary congratulations. |

for stuff like art, why wouldnt you use instagram?
|
what about a website of your own and a social media presence that showcases the less racy stuff but hints at the subject matter?
based on what i see FB revenue is almost entirely sham-wow type garbage hocked by clowns that figured out alibaba. keep your brand out there but share the goods on your on site. |

Flagging my sketch as pornographic is just one of many reasons I'm weary of the platform. |

selling or otherwise. |

I have an art account on Instagram. That's how I know it's limit. ;) That said, I do appreciate your, and everyone else's, input. |
I looked at the link but then a pop-up happened and the page became locked. How annoying.
(and at the bottom of the screen it sez Instagram is also owned by Meta/Facebook) IMO some of that artwork qualifies for the NSFW label, and perhaps not suitable for a 'family friendly' environment. Perhaps keep the art and the social media chat thing separate? Host elsewhere and provide a link on your FB page. https://www.techradar.com/best/best-image-hosting-websites |

For instance, you did a fairly decent job of sanctimoniously passing judgement on myself, and my art, based on your personal morals. And you did it in a subtly judgemental and demeaning way. Where your input falls flat is in assuming I'm interested in adhering to your morals. I have no more interest in doing that than I do in abiding by those of a Muslim, condoning me for depicting living things. I am happy you reacted, in some way, to my art. (It was my art and not the pop-up, right?) That's every artist's goal. Thank you. |

I do have an Instagram account where I post just my art. My work is cityscapes. Most artists I know do the same. Again, life drawing paintings are posted. Social media companies are very sensitive in the content they display - there is allot of inappropriate content out there and allot of predators too, but I don't see you painting as that. |

Art is a very good thing and wonderful way to pass the time and express oneself. In my youth I drew quite a bit and took many classes in school, but haven't lately and should. It's wonderful and inspiring to see others doing it. You have some talent. Before the Instagram page locked I noticed some of the subject material involved genitals and hands, which would naturally trigger a NSFW label by websites. The classic naked statues of old can get away with cherubs molesting naked women, murders are live-streamed on channels, but some websites are more finicky and sensitive these days with user content. That is all. Keep on drawin' |
Bummer about the pop-up and the locked page; that can be super annoying! And yeah, it's worth noting that Instagram is also under the Meta/Facebook umbrella.
