Electric engine sounds

Have y'all read about the Shelby Mach E's engine sounds? seems rather goofy to me, but people must like it or it wouldn't be a thing.

What are your thoughts?

Might be a good thing if speakers project outside...pedestrian safety.

Audio veneer, how stupid.

Totally lame, hate it. However this was pretty cool when I was a kid. Anyone remember these. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BsVS82e7tKE?si=kDaT5fM2Hirqsj5X" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I’m not a car enthusiast, but I know people tend to hate fake *****. (Just look at the fake meat industry. It’s not doing so well.) It stands to reason that they will hate this.

My parents weren't going to buy something as frivolous as that. For us it was playing cards against the spokes, or nothing.

No, I don't like it.

This months Car and Driver also has an article about the 2025 Mustang GTD.
They are stating an estimated MSRP of $300K
Ridiculous...800 hp....let the damage begin.

I think there are cars that have had synthetic motor sounds via the car stereo for the past ten years or so. I think I remember reading about bmw playing sound over the car stereo to enhance the sound of the motor while inside the car. They put so much sound deadening in the cars that they then had to synthesize motor sound using the stereo.

Don't most CVT transmission do the fake shift with a sound mimicking a conventional geared transmission? And some cars come with adjustable exhaust notes. A slippery slope.

Yeah, not big on adjustable sounds or fake feedback. It's a g'damned car, not an entertainment device. Certainly don't need 800hp to go to the commute to work, run errands, or cruise on Saturday nights.

I have no short-comings that such crap would solve. I don't need a penis extender!

Which was AWESOME!

My Taycan has it. The sound is not like a “muscle car” ICE but an electric sound that increases in pitch during acceleration. Also projects outside at low speed to alert pedestrians in parking lots, etc.

Is it cheesy? Maybe, but I like the sound as I think Porsche nailed the tone. Everyone I’ve had in the car likes it as well. To each his own I guess.

CVT cars usually "shift" because it freaked people out that they didn't. They don't add sounds to the shift as far as I know. It's just an abrupt change of RPM like an ordinary transmission. My wife's outback shifts most of the time occasionally under certain circumstances it'll actually perform in a CV manner.

My boxster has the PSE which opens baffles in the muffler when engaged so it's not fake sound.

Lots of cars also have gauges that work more like idiot lights. For instance lots of temp gauges are built in a way that they show 3 temperatures, low, regular, high. The"regular" temp puts the needle dead middle of the scale whether the actual temp is 180°, 200°, or 230°.

Very interesting. Thanks for the input.

Until they come up with the whine of straight cut gears, no. Not for me.

Zeke 10-22-2023 04:45 PM

I'm sure I will never own a car with 'sound'.

I tried balloons for awhile. I just couldn't bring myself to sacrifice a trading card. :D

I have witnessed the opposite and I have listened for it when folks bring their car to me and tell me it's not shifting. lol

Thats a Patriot, a Forester and one other one I can't remember.

Drain the transmission and grease those belts.
