I just bought another Interceptor......
This makes my 6th....although from what I understand the '90 I bought earlier this year isn't supposed to be called an "Interceptor", IIRC.....
I have a pretty good track record of eBay vehicle purchases.....so hopefully the trend continues. This time the bike is in another state and apparently doesn't have a title! So will take a little extra effort to complete the process. The good news is the seller has a great reputation so that will help. I've only paid a deposit and will talk to the seller tomorrow to figure out the next step(s). Link to auction: And video: <iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ukx3ojlzoPQ" title="1986 Honda VFR700F Interceptor" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
BTW....according to the VIN, this is an early production (#357) F2 model, which is the updated VFR700F. Has the square gauges too, so essentially the same bike as my '87's.
That white color wasn't offered until '87 too. I was looking for another '87 so essentially I have that in this '86 bike and it is in better overall condition than all the other '87's I have. My very first VFR was originally white, but re-painted yellow by the previous owner. The next two I bought were blue. Now I finally have an original white example! :) |
Yeah, Gabe Kaplan is, by all accounts a stand up guy. I love his channel, been subscribed for years. He gets some really, really cool bikes. I just wish he wasn't so dang far away.

Yeah - this will be my first out of state purchase but people do it every day so hoping for a relatively smooth transport...... Quote:

Doesn't have the correct mirrors or front turn signals but I will resolve that at some point.
Pretty cool to have the factory exhaust with the twin mufflers. All 3 of my previous ones have had Kerker singles...... |

Very cool Baz!
You've got quite a collection of them going- My big brother's 83 has stock mufflers too, when the originals rusted/wore out he insisted on another set even though the parts guy at the local Honda shop was suggesting aftermarket set ups that were a lot cheaper. He loved the way is sounded and didn't want to monkey with jets or settings... they do look and sound very good http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1699335624.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1699335624.jpg Rebuilding the carbs after it had set for too many years returned it to a smooth idle and good response http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1699335624.JPG |
Looks great in white!
What fun. Yeah, white suits the styling of it. |
At first, I thought Jensen, then Crown Vic. Open the thread and it is a crotch rocket. You can't pack found things on a crotch rocket.
|
Thank you all for the congratulatory comments - much appreciated.
Just got off the phone with Ken and got the info to wire the balance. Transport cost will be $650 door to door - fully insured bonded etc. etc. - very reasonable... I'm off to work and will send updates as appropriate! :) |
Hey, I bought a bike from him back in March. Great service, and bike turned out to be better than what he was showing. He and his crew do really good restoration work when needed, and they also are cornering the market on pristine garage queens from the 1960's, 70's and on....
Also liked his tour of the Goodyear Blimp. |
Dang Baz, another Interceptor!
As Capt. Fifi would say http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1699382073.jpg |
Nice looking bike Baz. I don't remember ever seeing one of those in white, possibly not available up here so it would not get lost in the snow.
|
Looks like another great bike. I admit it. I am sort of jealous. Not only do you have great bikes but you have great weather for riding.

I've watched quite a few of his videos and agree his staff does a fantastic job getting these bikes ready for auction. If you watch that video, Kenny said this bike was the last one his long time mechanic worked on before leaving. And he was a real whiz at working on these V4's. Bucket list would be to get up there for a tour of his museum one day! |

I guess this being an '86 F2...it had the same color option as the '87's. To be honest...I didn't know that was even possible until I read up on this particular bike! Quote:

For those who didn't view the auction site....this is the work that was done on this bike by Kaplan's staff to get it ready for auction:
New Yuasa Battery Fuel Tank Drained, Inspected and De-rusted New OEM Fuel Petcock Assembly New OEM Gas Cap & Keys New Fuel Lines New Fuel Filter New OEM Fuel Tank Cushions Carburetors Removed, Disassembled, Cleaned & Rebuilt New Fuel Tube O Rings Micro Drilled Pilot Jets Fuel Screws Set Fresh VP94 Non-Ethanol Fuel Bled Clutch Master Cylinder with Fresh DOT4 Fluid New OEM Replica Hand Grips New Mirrors New Ignition Switch Assembly OEM Right Handlebar Switch Assembly New RK Gold 530 Final Drive Chain Set Tire Pressures Complete 100% Check Over Hot Water Pressure Washed, Polished & Degreased Polished Hardware, Wheels, Forks, Controls, Fenders Buffed Paint, Touched Up Engine, Etc. ================= I suspect the bike didn't have a key which is why they changed out the gas cap and ignition. As stated earlier, the 2 mirrors and front turn signals are after market and I will end up swapping those out for stock versions. In the video it is mentioned it has two new Dunlop tires but I don't see that listed in the above list so we'll see when it arrives. ========= I absolutely love the fact the fuel system was thoroughly gone through. The new grips and chain as well. I can't wait to see if it will feel like my first VFR - the yellow '87 I bought back in the 90's.... |

I read "Interceptor" and was hoping for Jensen.

Well the sun finally came out and I was able to take my new baby out for a quick spin. Runs amazingly! At some point I will post a vid.
As stated earlier.....as some point I will be swapping out the aftermarket mirrors and front winkers to the factory versions. Already working on that. I also have to get a title and register her.....;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700322280.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700322280.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700322280.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700322280.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700322280.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700322280.JPG |
That's a beauty, Baz. Very elegant color. I hope to see pictures of the Intercepter collection en masse soon!
(What IS the story with those front turn indicators? I probably would have never noticed them but now I can't stop looking at them - they look like they fit the fairing pretty well, but they really don't match the style of the machine....) |
Quote:
Based on some of the minor nicks and scratches on the right side of the bike, it's my opinion it went down on that side resulting in damage to the mirror and blinker on that side. Thus the decision was to replace them. Obviously if you are changing the style you have to change both sides to match. The factory front blinker looks just like the rear blinkers, so very consistent in appearance, hence your observation. |
Are the indicators that are on it an aftermarket piece designed for the Honda or is it just a good match from some rando car or bike?
|
Not my bike, but same year/model and shows the matching blinkers......and OEM mirrors.....

BTW, the fronts have 3 wires and are supposed to stay on as running lights. The rears with only 2 wires only come on when activated by the turn signal switch. |

But - sorry I couldn't resist. Here is "The Interceptors" title sequence from a Top Gear episode during which the Jensen Interceptor was featured: <iframe width="743" height="418" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qLp4FhDAfQk" title="'The Interceptors' Title Sequence - Top Gear - Series 17 Episode 5 - BBC Two" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I have a set of used winkers on the way........still working on the mirrors.
Yesterday I discovered none of the keys work in the helmet hanger which also serves as a release for the seat. Going out now to remove it and see if I can get it reconfigured to fit one of my keys. The seller had replaced the ignition and fuel cap and I guess they didn't think to make sure this third "keyed" component was included in the refitment. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700423673.jpg |
Nice one @Baz . I’ve always wondered what buying a bike from Kaplan would be like. The guy sure has energy lol.
I’ve had a zillion V4 Hondas over the years, seemingly every gen and size. Yes I’m an addict. The RC30 is my V4 obsession. Yes I know not very original but what can I say I like what I like. Had 4 in the past I stupidly sold. But not this time! Maybe 7 years ago I learned of a project French market 1988 RC30 that had lived in Guam. Now here in Seattle in project form. Turns out the guy had a 1995 916 “Varese” also a project. It took almost 6 years but finally the guy caved. I bought both bikes. The duc was less of a project so I woke him up first. Then the Honda! Took me maybe a year. It has plenty of patina but it runs/rides like new with many choice, period mods. I absolutely love it! Trying to add pics but using this forum is just as frustrating as I remember lol |

There was a nice RC30 that sold on B.A.T. in January....$30K! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1990-honda-rc30-3/ Sorry you couldn't get your photos posted. There is a feature once you start your new message just below the message body in blue coloration "Click Here To Upload Photos". Once you click on that a new box comes up. You just drag your photos into that box one at a time and when they show they are uploaded you close that box and then hit the "Submit Reply" button. The photos need to be Jpeg files. I don't know if this helps. Kenny was a good guy to do this deal with but we had a few minor glitches I had to followup with so it wasn't perfect. He stays pretty busy so stands to reason there will be stuff not going perfect. My name was misspelled on the paperwork they mailed me so I'm waiting for a new batch to come. Until then I can't title or register the bike. Then none of the keys that came with the bike fit the lock in the back for the helmet and to release the seat so I had to take that off and send the key code to an eBay seller to get keys made. I'm hoping those arrive by end of week. There was also a $500 deposit I paid via PP as soon as the auction ended that accidentally wasn't applied to my wire transfer calculation. I got that refund today as soon as I called it to Kenny's attention. He also offered to reimburse me for the keys so he's been a stand up guy in every way. There's always going to be little glitches when you buy something - especially long distance. The bike really runs great! I will upload a video at some point. I can't really ride it until I get the registration - last thing I want is for it to get towed off. The fairings would get damaged I'm sure! Safe riding my friend.....and hope to see some pics of your machines! SmileWavy |
Photos of my first bought VFR700 and my most recent one......
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700665773.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1700665773.JPG All 3 of my others have a single Kerker exhaust. Note also how much better the OEM mirrors (and from blinkers) look..... |

New documents arrived today and all is well. Will head to tag office on Monday to see about getting a title and registration.
Also.....the new keys arrived today from the eBay seller and they work PERFECTLY on the helmet/seat release lock. Also....today I rented a storage unit to help with my bike storage situation until I get my side yard structure finished. It's 10'x15' and will run just under $100/month and that includes taxes and insurance so not too bad. I hit the tipping point 3 bikes ago so have had this on my mind for a while now and am relieved to have made the decision. The place I'm renting from is the same one I used many years ago for my landscape business and also had my 914 and 911T in there for a while. Today was like a homecoming in a way. The place has changed hands a couple times since and is now owned by CubeSmart. The manager is a lady from Texas...former Marine Corp! Super nice too. Makes a difference to enjoy who you do business with! I'll start moving some of my bikes over next week. They need a copy of the registration so these last two acquisitions will take longer, since they didn't come with titles. I'm working on it though.....:) |
