I have a 17 Tahoe. I'm having trouble updating the factory navigation. GM parts say the update, which is a usb stick is out of stock. This has been like this for over a year. The dealer thinks they may be able to do something

I hate having anyone work on my vehicles. That’s why I drive Toyotas, they don’t break. The only good thing about taking your car to the shop is that sometimes they leave a tool under the hood that you get to keep.

And with the absolute garbage coming out of China. Cars will need to be dumped after 12 months of use.

It's not inexpensive to reprogram a module by yourself. Best bet it to take it to the independent who spent the money ($5K US+) on the kit and pay them the $150 to re-flash. Even if you have to tow the car.

And not all used modules can be reflashed . And. there are so many different versions of one module, just because it came out of the same year make model, does not mean it will work correctly.

It is one thing to have $10,000 car you can't fix. Different ball game whwn it is quarter million dollar piece of equipment you rely on for your annual income

I love looking at the 2024 GT3RS. Can't afford it.

I have always wonder how it's going to age and how hard it's going to be to keep it on the road.

My guess it's not going to be like the original 1973RS. Far from it.

Wondering at what point it's going to be useless and need to be disposed.

Not sure how long you plan on keeping it but changing out the head unit to one with CarPlay may be an option worth considering.

It won’t be as fluid as the OEM solution, they’re a little finicky but if you rely on accurate maps it might do the trick.

When my wife went on-line and "built her Macan" on the Porsche web site, she built what she wanted. One thing was wanted was no GPS, but she did want Apple Car play. Just plug in an iPhone, and the phone's display is on the dash. Punch in a destination, and Apple Maps or Google Maps, whichever you prefer is ready. Always up to date, and "free" if you don't count the cost of having a smart phone with a data plan. We both have those anyway, so it is free.

I remember when the first 911s came with a built in navigation system. One of my local PCA friends had one, and every year he had to pay for some expensive DVDs to update the system. Then they were discontinued. His system is decades out of date. He is left with the option of aftermarket replacement head units.

In my 38 year old 911 I put in a Balaupunkt Bremen head unit. It sounds great, has Bluetooth, and if I plug in my phone it will play the music on my phone, or Pandora, and give me turn by turn directions to my destination. And it looks right in the dash.

$250,000 is about half what any newer harvest equipment costs if it has green paint.

A friend bought all new green this year. New tractor, new seeder, and 2 new combines last year. All with green paint.

Here's an overview of what Apple has done to prevent users from fixing their own computers and phones, especially with third party parts. I have no doubts that John Deere is using similar techniques and that car manufacturers are aware of these methods of using software and hardware to keep the consumer from accessing the guts of a product that the consumer arguably "owns". I'm especially intrigued about Apple slowing down phones if battery life has dipped below a certain level. I've heard of car manufacturers like Honda crippling the horsepower of their cars if the transmission has been replaced under warranty.

Let's face it. It's all a game, and it's easy to be cynical when the dealer gets to draw from the bottom of a completely different deck.

So, yeah, we can shore up the right to repair laws, but the manufacturer will just throw down more and more roadblocks to frustrate the consumer.

One of the things I love about the Windows platform is I built my computer from just the pile of parts I chose, ordered online, from different vendors, and the software I wanted. Windows itself takes some time to customize as Microsoft is under the impression every computer is a laptop, used by multiple users in random locations, and they all love to play games.

It took me a lot of time and effort to kill off kill off the dang games, and convince my computer I really do want to share my hard drives with the other two computers I have. Microsoft needs an option that upon initial setup, no games, maximum performance, and this is not a laptop so battery life is irrelevant. In the end, I have my computer set up exactly like I wanted it, and I can change any component with a different one from any manufacturer.

I check out a few Macintosh "workstations" and all of them had pitiful amounts of RAM, and small storage. In the end, three of the powerful mapping programs I use regularly simply require Windows Professional or Enterprise to run and they run best with a ton of RAM.

I did that on my Z06, it has a built on Garmin.
I like the factory radio because there's a button that raises the screen where there's a hidden storage area.
Plus I can't believe that GM won't offer support for a 6 year old vehicle

Hopefully I'll keep it for at least 10 years. I did the Apple CarPlay on my Z06, it works pretty good
