Ferrari

If you want a Ferrari movie more about Enzo at a point in time in the history of the company, this movie is for you. If you want a Ferrari movie about racing, the Shell commercial is a better bet. Just watch that 10 times and you are better off than the movie.

There is some racing but it has none of the magic that Ford vs. Ferrari or Rush did and doesn't even give you goosebumps like the commercial below does.

What struck me about the movie most was that, and I don't know anything about Enzo Ferrari other than the racing and automotive empire that he built, is there is no way in hell he would have been like Adam Driver portrayed him. Why they chose him, or wrote and directed him the way he was is beyond me.

Should you see it? I guess. But streaming F vs. F again is probably a better use of racing movie consumption time.

On Enzo - bummer. I was hoping for a cool movie with car content

On the Shell commercial, I've got an HD copy downloaded and watch that periodically, and often more than once at a time.

The Shell commercial is brilliant!!

I am intrigued by the Ferrari movie and will probably watch it.

Shaun - Thanks for your review

Thanks for lowering my expectations. I'll enjoy it more.

Yep, and I'll probably watch it when it's available to stream.

Peter Brock wrote the book that the movie is based on. Perhaps Brock put more emphasis on the beauty of the machine — all parts. I understand there is engineering content.

herr_oberst 12-25-2023 07:56 AM

^^^ I'm pretty sure it was the other Brock that wrote Ferrari; the Cannonball Brock...

I am interested in if anyone has a different take on the movie than mine. Going up against Ford vs. Ferrari and Rush, it just didn't measure up. One example and this it not a spoiler, there is aerial footage of racing. You get excited instantly. 2 seconds later it's done. There's one spot where you can see curves coming up that would have made for a great shot. Footage never got there.

I get confused. Brock Yates, 1991. You are correct. Thanks.

URY914 12-25-2023 04:38 PM

It will be on Hulu in about 6 months. Then I'll watch it.

I thought Adam Driver was fine as Enzo. Maybe I'm biased in his favor, as I think he's a good actor. I thought the race scenes we as good as I've seen in the movies. The bad crash was horrific and upsetting, and certainly conveyed the tragedy around each corner in those days. The cars and the 1957 setting were spectacular.

Like Napoleon, it's a shame a big chunk of the movie was about an unhappy marriage, although Penelope Cruz was fantastic. I have to believe the movie could have been based on a more interesting story.

jyl 12-25-2023 06:42 PM

I’ll see anything with Penelope Cruz, actually . . .

Steve Carlton 12-25-2023 06:47 PM

She's already rumored to likely to win the best supporting actress Oscar. Fortunately, the casting wasn't super accurate...

Saw it tonight with the wife and daughter. Thought it was B- to C+, They agreed. Sorry I wasted the money and should have waited for it to come to the little screen. Guy who played Enzo was awful.

serene911 12-26-2023 09:18 AM

That's unfortunate, usually Michael Mann movies are exceptional, Last of the Mohicans, Heat,
etc. Was also looking forward to seeing it.

herr_oberst 12-26-2023 09:50 AM

I will see this on the big screen. Even if I have to go alone. As an enthusiast, I think I owe it to myself to see a movie about Enzo Ferrari by Michael Mann, as a first run, and judge the quality for myself. We've been lucky to have major motion pictures such as Rush and Ford vs Ferrari and Senna and while all of them had their strengths and weaknesses, it was worth seeing them on the big screen, larger than life.

Thanks for the review, Shaun. I can't wait to see this. I'm a fan of Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz. Michael Mann? NSM, but he's the director, so I'll withhold judgement.

It's nice to see a resemblance in casting. Some have been really convincing as long as the actor it is also doing the character well. Matt Damon was the worst while Christian Bale was totally believable. I'm sure there were a lot of craggy Texan type guys that could have done Shelby's part very well. I really couldn't be transported into Shelby whatsoever. All I saw was Damon.

I guess it's in not what, but who they can sell. I suppose the "Jason Bourne" fame helped close that deal.

So I watched the trailer and I agree, Adam Driver was not the right actor (said w/o seeing the movie).

When is the Brad Pitt F1 movie coming out? They got the guy, now all they need is a good race movie and leave the emotional baggage on the train. If it has 10% of the Alonso documentary content about how these guys live and train, it will be realistic, at least in that sense.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-26-2023 11:29 AM

I am not a fan of Adam Driver but it was more the script and the direction that sunk him in this movie. For me the problem with Driver is he is one-dimensional. I've seen him in:

All 3 Star Wars movies
House of Gucci
The Last Duel
Marriage Story
Ferrari

They are all the same character or I should say they are all the same character in either the 2nd or 3rd Star Wars movie, probably 3rd, I'd done my best to scrape the memory of those movies from my brain so hard to tell.

Robert Downey Jr. with prosthetics and camera work would have been much better. Same with Christian Bale. Both could create and project a proper 1950s Italian male gravitas. Driver portrayed Ferrari as a millennial.

Also noteworthy would be Pedro Pascal and Javier Bardem or pull someone from Italian film making.

Steve Carlton 12-26-2023 01:45 PM

Christian Bale was the first one considered for the Ferrari role. He pulled out over concerns about having to gain weight. Hugh Jackman was going to play the role, but cancelled due to unknown reasons. I suspect Robert Downey Jr would have been great in the role. Without knowing what Enzo was really like, it's hard to say if his portrayal was accurate or not.

How so?

Turbo_pro 12-26-2023 02:22 PM

Enzo was a DICK. The only interest I have in Ferrari is today's technology.
I am especially impressed with this little gem. 120 degree 3.0 V6 producing 654- ICE hp output, coupled to an electric assistance providing another 164-hp.
The most HP per liter of any production car on the market....or so they claim.

BTW: The way the Scuderia treated Vettel was Euro-trash bullshyt.
