Trade in .40 spoon?
 

I have a Sig P226R in .40, picked it up roughly 20 years ago when .40 was the new wunder caliber. Nothing wrong with it, nice gun. It's my home defense weapon, and occasionally I also target shoot with it. Fact is, it's a declining caliber, and while ammo is still readily available today, it's nothing like the world of 9mm. Add to that the perceived recoil is quite a bit sharper than 9mm (and oddly, a .45), so its not as enjoyable to shoot.

I was thinking of trading it in for Sig P365 xMacro. I'm guessing they would give me about $400 for it. I don't need the $400, but I've been trying to convince myself that I will have no use for the gun once I get a new full size 9mm.

Help me get off the fence here. Any reason to keep the .40?

Just buy the 9mm barrel and some mags for that gun. No other changes necessary. You can eBay off your .40 barrel if you'll never shoot it again. I have three P226s in all three calibers. It's a fantastic platform. I might be willing to part with one of my P365s for your P226, but I'm keeping my Macro.

I will look into that, but I seem to recall that you could only get a .357 Sig barrel for this gun, not a 9mm. If that is the case, then problem solved, I will keep it. EDIT: Kits were made, but currently not available from SIG, and are going for nearly the cost of new gun.

This should work. I can't recall if you have to get a conversion barrel or any 9mm one will do. I've swapped all barrels between my three P226s and they all worked fine.

hmmm I wonder if a Beretta 96 .40 would accept a 9mm barrel.

I've got a Sig 229 in .40 with the additional 357 Sig barrel. I also have a 226 in 9mm. I've also been thinking of dumping the 229.

I think to add the 9mm barrel you also have to upgrade the slide. Like HD says, it starts to hit the price point of a new pistol.

Have not read anywhere that the .40 is a declining caliber.

Sounds like you are just itching for a new gun. Nothing wrong with that.
Trade in probably won't get you much. I'd just buy another.

Companies are offering fewer and fewer 40 cal guns. Ammo is not as plentiful and is more costly. I have found folks who shoot 10 mm are still shooting .40 from the same gun to lessen the cost and recoil.

Most folks are going to 9 mm, 45 ACP (or for the harder core folks .357 and 10mm). If you aren't needing the money and have the space for storing the gun, why not keep it? You may need it as a backup if your regular gun needs repair. God forbid there is another ammo drought like in 2020-2021, sometimes you can find a less popular brand still on the shelf when everything else is gone.

My attitude is, I haven't seen any quality brand gun go down in value so it won't hurt to keep it.

I bit the bullet (ahem) and traded it in. They gave me $425 for it. Brought home a P365 Macro. Going to get some range time tomorrow. Anyone need 600 rounds of. 40 ammo, I’m having a fire sale.

Though I have a baby Ruger in 9mm (LC9S), I'll always grab my Colt Combat Commander in .45 ACP ... never did "get" the .40/10mm fad over .45 anywho... but I digress ... ;)

I'd love that .40 ammo, but shipping probably makes it a false economy, unless you ignore the regs and ship Priority Mail.

I've considered making the .40 to 9mm swap on a Glock, but in the early days of Covid there was a dearth of 9mm ammo but plenty of .40, so I built up a pretty good inventory.

I will close this out by saying I am very happy I made the trade. I put 200 rounds through the P365 today. It's kind of an engineering marvel. 17+1...amazing. Very consistent groups. The quality of the castings for the frame is incredible. The online reviews made the trigger sound pretty bad, but I disagree. Could it be smoother, sure, but I had no trouble getting into a groove with it.
