Brazilian bungee jump incident

This has been bothering me! Utterly nutbags...

How do you explain this?

3rd world country. Wife and I were in Puerto Vallarta 25 years ago and she wanted to try the boat dragged sail thing. The staff at our resort said no, the operators were always different and something goes wrong and they cut the rope and speed away.

Ha! I did that parasail thing in Puerta Vallarta too maybe 30 years ago. The guy said when we come back in and you hear my whistle pull on the right rope hard or you'll hit the hotel. I came dangerously close. Then they took a federale kid up who really wanted to try it and they dunked him, uniform and all

I watched that video last week. I can’t believe nobody said anything.

That had to be terrifying for the bungee jumper. Waiting for the tension and bounce, but dive bombed into the ground

I thought she was screaming about the rope before they threw her over.

I still half think it was deliberate and she’d annoyed someone with enough $ to,pay for an accident.

Misremembered. It was a witness that was shouting about the rope, not her. My other point still stands though - this goes beyond negligence to the point you have to think malice was involved.

A friend's daughter was in Thailand back about 8 years ago for her honeymoon. She and her husband were at a zip line place. He didn't want to do it, but she kidded him about being scared, etc. and so he did. His equipment failed at a pretty significant height and he was killed. An investigation found they were basically using cheap amazon.com sourced D-rings and carabiners and other fasteners that were in no way appropriate for the application. The kid of carabiners you get at the gas station that at best can be used to carry your keys around. That was a good lesson in never doing this adventure type stuff in 3rd world places.

What's weird here is that it is not bungee jumping, it's ROPE jumping. And from what I've been able to research, it's exactly what it sounds like

Terrible tragedy but very preventable . Someone better be going to jail/prison for a very long time .

A friend's son had a similar story, harness broke when he was in the air, screaming for help, held on for his life.

Nope, not in a 3rd world country. No permits, no oversight, no inspections of equipment.

I don't understand how 1) 3 dudes that do this all of the time, including the dude holding her ankles didn't notice the absence of the rope, and 2) as the person going over, I would have stopped them and said "you need to tie a rope to me!"

Static line, nope, I don't think so. Bungee, stretchy, yes, not stretchy, no, unless I'm jumping from way off to the side.

Unless they can pay enough. I suspect Brazil is one of those countries where you can pay to get out of a lot of trouble. It may be that those guys can't afford it.

Maybe the fiancé said there is a hundred bucks for you if you forget to tie the rope to her.
I find it hard to believe he did not notice there wasn't a rope.

None of those guys didn't notice? And I find it hard to believe the victim didn't realize she wasn't harnessed. Something doesn't add up here

What about the jumper??? Didn't she speak up thinking it a bit odd that no one put her in a harness and attached a rope???

Why are they holding her? I've never bungee jumped and never plan to but all the pictures/video of it I've seen, the person jumps themself.

I'd sure like to see a video where they successfully throw someone off because it sure seems like the cord would catch one of those guys too.
