Rusty yellow 1972 Super Beetle.... Paid $50 for it about 1982 when I was 16. Froze my azz off driving it to school in the NW Ohio winters with no heat exchangers. Rolled it on it's side once. Repainted it twice (second time was because an old crazy girl friend I broke up with dumped a gallon of ZipStrip paint remover on it one night and flattened all 4 tires).

With most of the engine compartment tin long since rusted off/removed, I could have the engine out and sitting on my parents garage floor in 15 minutes flat.

Two of my buddies had Beetles too and we had lots of fun chasing each other around in them. If we ever saw one of the others parked in town, we would often detach the coil wire.... Of course that only had impact the first time or two.

IDT that is all of them, but enough to make the point.

That's a more effective search method than using the one on Pelican, which seems to only bring up stuff 10+ years old. Awkward, though. I see four threads:

Started 2004-2013, with a brief revival in late 2017:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/183810-ultimate-first-car-i-ever-owned-thread.html

Started 2002-2020 with gaps:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/67362-what-your-first-car.html

A brief one in 2005:
https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/237043-your-first-car.html

Another from 2020-2022:
https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1077065-what-your-first-vehicle-picture-if-you-can.html

Too hard to dig up old threads with the on-site search tool and add to them IMO. The older ones have very few pictures. I've seen only two responses from you (without pics), Mr. Lawncare, not 10.

Several duplicates from before, but some good posts. These caught my eye that have pics:

wow.... never thought i would disclose this to ANYONE...... but after all these years what the heck.....

1976 AMC Pacer

was my 1sy car!
300.00 on my 16th birthday.
  • not a single thing on the instrument panel worked.
  • no headlights
  • no speedo
  • no RPMS
  • no gas gauge
  • no windows on driver or passenger door
  • no door handles on the inside of the car, had to reach around to outside to open
  • there were holes in the floor pan that i could see the pavement, think flintstones!
  • no windshield wipers

BUT................... every time i turned it over... IT STARTED and got me to school and back.

i even went on a date with it. (i got asked, "are you taking my out in THAT?"

i said.... sure am.... get in.

Mine was white. Got it when I was 14 in 1968. Had it two years. Whopping 40hp and they were Shetland. Girls loved it. I caught a rash of **** because of the power but my best Bud had a Mercury cyclone with 10” slicks in back. We usually took his car if girls weren’t involved.

Failed my first driver's test in it after rebuilding the carb. Throttle response was very good and the inspector/tester said "You go around corners too fast."

@Steve Carlton, Mr. Lawncare, that's good. And you did a fine job of digging up some of the old threads. I'm sure I remarked about the Corvette more than 2wice but I did used to get around to about 4 forums daily, so just call me a confused old man. BTW, the '36 MG I posted about must have been my 15th car by 1972. I had the Corvette in '63 and '64.

Steve Carlton 05-21-2024 04:38 PM

That was some work, but it was fun going through the old threads. Lots of cool cars from members that are long gone, unfortunately.

Tobra 05-21-2024 05:51 PM

Zeke, your first car was a Corvette, seriously?

Gotta say, that is the coolest, with Big Healey and Sunbeam Tiger also on the podium

These days, kids are not so into cars

Yes, I wanted one from when I saw the first '54. I mowed a lot of lawns. I washed windows and had summer jobs as a teen. I saved a thousand and my dad kicked down a few more hundred that I worked off. $1600 total and tax then was like 3%.

I posted a pic of the same as my first car in that thread.

Sniper has a couple posts also.

DonDavis 05-24-2024 04:02 PM

Sniper! I want to do a monkey roll just thinking about that guy. :D

Pulling the coil wire was a favorite trick of my friend and myself, both with Beetles. If you were out somewhere in the car wouldn’t start, it was time to check the coil wire

I bought this 64 1/2 Mustang from a guy in high school for $100.

I regretted not having a photo of it. I didn't even have a camera back then...but recently got some old photos from my father-in-law and it was there in his driveway in this photo (above). It was his son that sold it to me.

About a year after I bought the car, I met the guy's older sister...and it was love at first sight. The car was already gone...but I kept her. We eventually got married.
