What to do with Compact Discs
Fully entrenched with a nice streaming system (better than CD sound quality in most cases) and vinyl via a VPI Prime table and Manley phononstage.
Listed my CD player (Marantz CD6007) on USAM, but have no idea what to do with my CD collection. It’s mostly jazz and classical with some classic rock, etc. Open to suggestions. Have a small fortune invested but literally never use them at all. Could use the shelf space. Just drop them off at Goodwill? |
I used 'Second Spin' online for most of mine....but I think they are no longer in business.
There are many others like them online now. Or Ebay. |
Make some garden art out of them. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...58f176e4eb.jpg

You could try selling them (individually or in sets).
A lot of people are reverting back to physical media (including cassette tapes). |
I put about 80% of my collection in one of these about 15 years ago. I threw away all the jewel cases, but saved the art in a seperate box. The box has migrated to my attic about 5 years ago when I lost the cd player in my old daily driver.
reduces space requirements by a huge margin. Threw away at least 150lbs of jewel cases https://www.amazon.com/Silver-Aluminum-Storage-Holder-Sleeves/dp/B00CDWZ5XA/ref=sr_1_32?crid=XMMZFEX490L7&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.1yl 8Z80cg9ikNpvmfb_IC6-P3u2L77WuF_SZ0CxW7UtQjsyfa_ASC3hUCBLroL_FZFZ7pVK2y rJZyeYJqZbNABkimO-6LDvssxfA21e1IMIvGWeARY-64lPXOzMpCfsBnyyR9sreQ3DhPB1lDVV8zn8WrpzRuKJNXlgF5 MYjy-Dq8pu8Gugy5YeOtrowePjwy8ej9cJM99BxYldGCinxtKPaVJ3t SR3n71-RrIeyEyIgBg7S18ep6Wy03uaOLop2-CCMdStp9vuMMrhUjLDE-W3yq6Oy62BE-FBfPFMYW-c.5lrEbasoMINeXX_B8wlVvpFBdU134SpirC4iHodPzNM&dib_ tag=se&keywords=1000+cd+dj+sleeves&qid=1716504606& sprefix=1000+cd+dj+sleeves%2Caps%2C146&sr=8-32 |
Selling them seems more trouble than it’s worth…especially individually.
|
Wish I had space. I'd happily buy a bunch of them. I ripped all of mine and they are in storage, but even then, I mostly listen to Pandora when I'm driving or in the office, not my ripped music.
Do you have a half price books nearby? They used to buy CDs. You wouldn't get much, but if you've got a ton, it might be decent pocket money. Then you'd be putting them back out there for someone that wants them. |
Rip to very hig quality mp3 or maybe ogg - as lossless or high quality as possible in a open if not standard format and store on a NAS or other redundant drive system
Then sell or donate discs, or put on spindles and store |
|
I would be very pleased to pay for shipping.
Of course, then I would have half a million CD’s I never listen to. |
Any classical guitar in there?
|
I'd keep 'em. Nothing like leafing through inlays.
Also some things to consider: are any of them NOT in the streaming service you have? Streaming = renting. I presume you've ripped them all into some lossless format. |

Truth be told, it's exactly the CD player I'm looking to buy to go with my new to me Marantz PM6003. |
Sell them to a local music store.
My local record shop will give you store credit and/or cash. Then you can get something you really want. Are we talking hundreds of CDs, thousands? |
Put 'em in a box and away somewhere. One day your kids will thank you.

I still have about 3,500 CDs but have about 3,500 LPs and I stream. Vinyl is my preference but I have a Rega Planet 2000 CD player that still works perfectly after being beat to hell for 24 years but with no CD players in my cars I find I am playing them less. so now I have 2 100 CD changers in my basement system. One is full with jazz only and the other is all live dead shows. In 6 months I will empty them and fill with all blues or whatever…..when I don’t feel like streaming or playing vinyl, I’ll just hit shuffle on the CD changer and drink some beer. I find I get a lot of use out of them this way….and I still collect the new release Dave’s Picks Dead shows so I guess I’m still attached to the CD world for a while. I would never ever sell them as I spent close to 40 grand or probably more for them goin back to 1985
If you have no interest in them, sell em to your local record shop. My shops here still buy them and sell them. Unfortunately you won’t get more than a buck or two for each but your shop will be thankful to have new inventory in their used CD section |

Different plastics used in CD's can make a difference whether they last or don't. It's many years though. I have way more cassettes that haven't been played hundreds of times. They are likely good for ripping but I lost interest in music.
|
^^^ I have come across 2 CDs from my collection that will no longer play….both about 30 years old. I saw a show by the Smithsonian a while back that discussed this inevitable problem for many. I talked to a friend who owns a record store since 1988 and he hasn’t noticed any alarming trend yet but it is a thing and I’ve now experienced it

I have ripped allot of mine. You could try a 2nd hand bookstore at a minimum get a store credit. I still have vinyl and some Sheffield direct to disk, but I won't part with them. Vinyl is sooo much better than CD or mp3
|
If you are into any genres outside of mainstream stuff cds can be worth a fair amount. Old punk and metal cds and some hip hop can be surprisingly valuable if you have first presses etc.
|
Remember when CDs used to be packaged in a rectangular cardboard sleeve? I still have the cardboard sleeve for my CD of Jane's Addiction, Ritual de lo Habitual. [emoji3]

Old CDs are great to hang in fruit trees to chase birds away and keep them from eating your apples. I used to hang them over my blueberry bushes too. I now use mylar tape.
|
I gave mine to the Goodwill. Now my record collection, which is small but growing, is staying with me. Empire 598 turntable, 1st gen Bose 901s, Pioneer 9500.

I actually just bought a neat Yamaha 5 disc CD carousel off eBay and now play all my CDs in the garage when I'm wrenching...love it. Great way to remember the years gone by.
Music makes a good..great. And a bad day..good. |
I ripped all of my CDs years ago. Now they are behind my Plex media server and I can stream them anywhere and wherever I want. I did the same for my dad. Took is CDs, ripped them and built him a little Linux box that he uses as his 'jukebox.'
I may go back and re-rip everything now that I think about it. Its been over 20years since and I am all but positive I did not rip them lossless. |
