Had a visit from black bear last night

Went to mow my lawn this morning and 5 ' from our garage was black bear scat . He or she must have made the deposit last night or early this morning as it was fresh .

Bear scat is fairly normal in our yard but I normally find it 50 ' or more away from the house . This was the first time it was that close . They have the right to survive , just part of living in the mountains.

Make sure you keep your garage door closed especially, you have food in a freezer or refrigerator. Also, if you have goodies in your garbage. I was working on the deck, next to the garage. While I was working, I heard Laura say,” Nick did you close the garage door?” Nick said,” yes.” So, Laura walks out into the garage and says,” oh my God.” I guess Nick didn’t close the garage door. The garage was a complete mess garbage everywhere. But fortunately, the bear didn’t get into the freezer or the refrigerator. This is while I was basically standing right next to one of the garage doors cutting board on my chopsaw. So the bear was in and out, made the big mess and left all without me hearing anything.

Another time, Laura just happened to look out the bedroom window and seen a bear leaping over the retaining wall with a garbage bag in it’s mouth.

Not only were their bears at the house. They were also mountain lions. While she moved into the house, the next-door neighbor came over and told Laura that the reason why there was lattice underneath the deck the previous owner installed because there was a mountain lion living underneath the deck.

Bears are rascals and will come around if there is something that interests them. Never had them near my house but they often would come down from the foothills in SoCal and relax in backyard pools and spas. They also like snacking on bird feeders.

Out in the woods we have had bear encounters many times and fortunately none were violent. We saw 10 black bears in one day, including 2 mothers with cubs while exploring Waterton National Park CN. There was always plenty of distance between us so we could observe them in peace. A few times we saw Griz in Glacier NP but again, plenty of distance so they were not a threat. I really don't want to meet one face to face on a trail through the huckleberry bushes.

If I leave some scat, does that deter them?

We keep our large garbage can in that garage , I think maybe he or she might of smelled the trash inside . Will never know for sure . We have lived here long enough to know keep stuff closed and inside . Once in the past on trash day a bear opened our trash can at the curb and helped himself to breakfast .

Nature and mankind can interface , you just need to be aware and practice common sense . Before I built that garage my wife one morning came out the door with a daschund in hand and a coyote was standing there ! That sure got her attention . We have deer crawling all over our place daily . We enjoy all of it . Just have to proceed with caution .

I can't access PPOT from my house most days and never saw a reply ... were you at Oak Hollow?

Coyotes and oodles of deer should not be just a few miles from there in "my woods" either... two locations in this county... next to "rural" counties ....

This is all recent ... last 2-3 decades....

I took a rifle to my parent's house a few weeks ago...

Coyote B-Gone if I get a chance .... they do NOT belong in HP (or Jamestown) ... foxes are OK .... I gots them plenty .....and don't have a henhouse
