Lets talk office chair

I spend most my time outside. Usually after dinner time, I sit on my desk and do some paper work, come here to see what's going on then maybe watch a movie or something interesting on utube so spending about 4- 5 hours on my chair daily is usually pretty normal. I know, about Herman-Miller chairs. Wife suggest I get one but I am just too cheap to fork out that kind of money. I have always bought chairs from Office Depot or places such as Costo or similar. They last about 6-7 years. This last one is a gaming one thinking its should be comfortable as it curves around my back. Nope, not too good but I manage and do like the pull out leg support when watching a movie. Any suggstions? I have been looking at those on Amazon for about 300-350 bucks. Thoughts?

You can get an Aeron from a used office furniture place for $400. They are so durable that a used one will look and last just fine. Mine is 20 years old, looks new.

There is no substitute. Nothing comes close. You are bringing shame to your ancestors and woe to your descendants by considering anything else. Have you no pride? Your wife is right. As usual.

Seriously, man, get the Aeron.

I have a Steelcase Chair for the last 15 years in my home. It is in my art studio and is used daily. Great chair with a lifetime guarantee. It retailed for $800. I don't buy cheap chairs, they don't last. Herman Miller is another great brand.

Shaun @ Tru6 06-29-2024 04:23 AM

I've had an Aeron for 12 years now. It's as good as the day I got it used off of CL for $300. Your body and comfort are worth $300 over 12 years and I'm sure it will go past 20 if not forever. It literally has not worn at all.

LOL! Best marketing line ever!

Herman Miller Aeron is a great chair. I've had them at most of my jobs for a long time now and they do seem to last forever. That's probably the best way to go.

That said, I'd love to have a chair made from an old seat out of a Porsche or a Recaro. I thought the seats in my old '88 were awesome. I think the sport seats in my boxster are also awesome. I wouldn't pay the ridiculous price for the Porsche office chair, but I would buy an old seat and figure out how to attach it to a good base.

Shaun @ Tru6 06-29-2024 08:09 AM

That's easy Steve, get an 18x18x1/4 sheet of aluminum (or whatever the length across the tracks is) and drill some holes, 4 for the seat tracks and 4+ for the old seat swivel.

Ayles 06-29-2024 08:26 AM

My wife and I bought a pair of these at the start of working from home back in 2020. We are both still working remote and they are good as new.

i have a Humanscale chair that i got off craigslist... not bad. Go to relax the back store amazing chairs there but big $$$$ gives you a good idea what an awesome chair is.

I have Tempurpedic office chair with lumbar support that is great.
The other option is that if you are going to be uncomfortable, then look cool!

Check out Secret Labs Titan.
My daughter convinced me to get one four or five years ago since I needed a new chair. I regularly sit in this chair 6-7 hours straight (just ask my wife).
It's as comfortable as the sport seats I had in my 911SC that were redone by AutoBahn in San Diego. I changed the casters to in-line skate types and it rolls great.

Yep, looks like the old seats in my old '88 targa. I'd love something like that.

Or better yet, the seats out of my boxster. But when Porsche was making and selling these (don't think they sell this model any more) they were something like $3500.
https://static0.carbuzzimages.com/wo...900/221946.jpg

I think it would be easier to buy a seat from someone that had swapped theirs out and attach it to a base. It wouldn't be as fancy, and it wouldn't have the power recline like the Porsche seat, but at a fraction of $3500, who cares.

That's good to hear. When I get a chair, it needs to be a good one, because like you, I may sit it in for many hours a day when I'm working from home. It's a bit more than the OP's budget, but if it's quality... In addition to being available from the manufacturer, they are also on Amazon. Looks like from the manufacturer they run roughly $450-650 (didn't check to see if there were "options" that increased the price)

Scott Douglas 06-29-2024 12:00 PM

When my daughter reco'd them they were on sale for @$369 w/free shipping. They had bought two of them and had them shipped to Japan where they were living at the time.
My old chair was one of those non-ergo chairs. It was ten years old when I finally got this one.
A lot of people would say it's too firm, but it works for me. It's a gamer's chair and those guys sit for days at a time from what I understand.

The casters were only $20 on Amazon. Well worth the change as it's silent when it rolls.

panelbilly 06-29-2024 12:49 PM

Performance 7754. I sell these all the time. Chair has everything you need and the $ is right.

I'm assuming this may be more like what you're recommending.

I suspect they won't go back down to $369, but I'll keep an eye out for sales.

Another +1 on the HM Aeron here. Best chair out there in my opinion.

Yup and 18 year warranty. They come to you to fix it.

Thanks guys. Just brought the Aeron home. Will report back once I get it dialed to fit my fat ass after dinner.

LOL, gonna be fatter after dinner...

I'd say "did you get the extra large?" (there are a few floating around at work)

But I've got a feeling what you're calling "fat" is more like a '70s fat than a fat today.

Scott Douglas 06-29-2024 04:38 PM

I hope it works out for you.

LOL!

Old man car.

Old man chair.

You're gettin' there.

OK, I take it back. Not really an old man chair. When I think "old man chair" this is what I picture.

I need a 70s suit, ones with the four pockets, almost balding, and a cig. in my mouth in order to qualify to seat in one of those. I think we all sat on one of those thing growing in our relative's homes.

look 171 06-29-2024 11:03 PM

Where was this chair for the past couple years? Oh boy where do I start? I sat for the past four hours, painless and didn't squirm around due to the pain in my ass from the old seat. I am sold. My only complain is the chair seems to tilt back some or wouldn't. I like a flatter seating position when doing paper work. now, I just gotta get me a head rest. Anyone use one of those? Again, maybe I am cheap and looking at an after market one. way I see it, heck, its only a head rest. A Herman-Miller head rest of over 120 bucks. El Chepo is only 45-50 bucks. Foot rest will eventually come later, I will have to make that.

Superman 06-29-2024 11:06 PM

The last office chair I loved...they took away from me. Because it had only four legs. Minimum five for safety they said. I never recovered. Retired instead. ;)

Your ancestors are proud and your descendants secure!

The mesh is nice on warmish days, you don’t get upholstery sweaty, can even set a fan to cool your back.

I’ve never tried a head rest on mine - let us know if you like it.

During the first part of Covid, used Aerons were super cheap with all the offices closing down. I wish I’d bought several then for my conference room.

They make them in 3 sizes. The medium fits 90% of people. I have a large and it’s a bit big but still works for me.

There are 2 options for the "tilt" mechanism. I prefer the "deluxe option" too, where you can adjust not only the tilt of the back, but also the tilt of the bottom.

My wife has an office chair she loves-the seat slants down toward the front. I despise the slant.

The Aeron's that have the "deluxe" slant/tilt option allow you to lock the seat so it's very slightly slanted forward as you describe, or locked so it's very slightly slanted backwards, or so it is free to rock from the slightly forward to quite far back. I prefer the seats that have that option. I am tall-ish with long legs, and usually sit with the seat as high as it will go. If I'm sitting up straight doing a lot of work/typing, I often lock it so it's slanted forward. Other times I'll lock it in the normal position. Since it's at work, I don't normally ever leave them free to move around and recline.

I had money from employer to buy a work from home chair. I went to every chair store in the area and hated everything. I wanted something to hold me, not give away with a controllable spring. Chairs were up to $4k. Was surprised that I hated the aerons. I needed something and Ended up with a $4 ikea chair from a thrift store.

It died a few weeks later and I lucked into a set of eames low back console office chairs. Just perfect for me and how I want to sit. I upgraded to bigger casters to roll on my carpet.

I don’t think there’s one perfect chair, try a bunch and find what you like.
