Dual-mass flywheel question:

Pretty sure that I know the answer but amazingly, this is the first time I've ever had to deal with one in my long career of taking things apart! The patient is my 2010 VW Jetta Tdi 6-speed manual with 170k miles, the last 40k or so of which it's had a bad rattling sound while idling in neutral with the clutch not depressed.

I finally got it apart and the flywheel has movement, (and a sound), between the two pieces but is not broken, i.e. the two pieces are still connected and the clutch functions correctly while driving. What on earth holds these two pieces together? Rubber? And why aren't they separated from each other??

I made a short video, not sure why I can't imbed it:

I recall mine had 'slipped' (radially) on my TDI. But it did not separate like yours did. I just replaced it. I'm pretty sure I had to grind some bolts or rivets too, maybe to get access to the flywheel bolts.

The clutch disc is original and looks like new with 170k miles, mostly city driving by me for the last 100k and plenty of hard launches from a rolling start.

Thanks, 1990!

Just about to order a new one. Mine hasn't slipped radially and the bolts are still accessible through the holes, so should be a straight forward job.

Mine was the same. 300,000 miles and clutch was still good.

I miss my TDI cars. Best cars, and cheapest, I've ever owned.

The Dual Mass on my cummins looked new after 40k miles but it slipped after tuning out the torque management from the ECM.

Remember the rubber centered clutch discs?

This is a solution that doesn't leave you stranded..

Just dealt with this on my Cayman... One shift everything was fine... the next.. chattering noisy clutch

Got the new one installed:

All new bolts, of course VAG loves to use triple square fasteners everywhere and really odd sizes for the hex bolts, (like 9mm). They just do not want you working on your own car:

The new flywheel is a nice piece, they use an asymmetrical bolt pattern and also balance the thing so there is only one way it goes on:

They are stretch bolts and you torque them 60Nm and then turn 90deg, (1/4 turn). I do the initial torque and then put paint marks at 12 o'clock which makes it easy to do the final turn in 2 steps in a proper pattern and keep track of which ones are done, etc.

The paint marks are a good idea. Nice work!

Triple square...only in Germany. I have a set by VIM tools that I haven't touched since the Porsche left here.

Hmmm, do you want to part with them? Send me a PM with price. Thanks.
