Oil Filters for the F250
 

The "get an oil change" message came up on the F250. I have plenty of oil, but I need an oil filter.

Motorcraft is OEM and cheap

K&N is supposed to be the one to get

Some swear by Wix

Opinions? SmileWavy

Dunno what year/motor but for my '22 7.3 gas I buy the Motorcraft (Ford) filters. Feels safer to me if there's every a warranty issue.

Wix, NAPA gold, Motorcraft.

Just stay away from Fram.

Last I heard was that Motocraft is made by Purolater to Ford specifications. I don't see how using an original equipment filter on anything is a bad way to go. I would suggest avoiding "The orange can of death"...

Motocraft. You can even get them from the Rock place. The next option I would suggest is Fleetguard (cheap at any of the big truck shops but you will need to know the part number) or Wix.

Oem specs aren’t always good.

In the Cummins world, fleet guard fuel filters have a lower micron rating compared to the hecho en mejico oem filters.

I use Fram filters all the time with zero issues.

Heck....my '02 Silverado now has over 240K on the clock.

Bought her back in '05 with 90K, so that's 150K just under my ownership.

And I change the oil much more frequently now than I used to....and certainly more frequently than what the truck's computer dictates.......

Wix was purchased by Mann & Hummel which many folks don't know . Charles Navarro from LN Engineering says the Wix filters made in the US and Mexico are still good quality . But the ones made in China are to be avoided .

I don't believe Napa Gold filters are made by Wix anymore . I thought I heard they are made off shore via Baldwin . Or maybe someone else . Who knows ?

For my GMC diesel dually and Chevy S10 Vortec V8 I use AC Delco . For the Porsche's I am still using Wix . For my wife's Volvo usually Mann . With mergers/buyouts/other it can be a crapshoot on quality as companies squeeze every penny of profit . And what was good quality last week may not be next week .

I think consistent oil analysis is the only way to know what is really going on .

I talked to my buddy last night - he left for their NC home this morning so got the oil changed in his Element yesterday. He takes his cars somewhere to have it done. Said the price went from $50 to $70, which surprised him. Like me he's getting up in years so stopped doing it himself some time back.

Like mowing my own lawn....I don't ever see letting someone else do my oil changes.....

These guys can take time to watch, but do some very impressive testing of various brands, have rigged up a test device to measure flow, particulate removal, particulate capacity, etc. They have several videos on this.

Note to Baz...keep breathing. You may find that you've reached an age where your body tells you what and when it's best to let others do it. It's not a good feeling, but it happens..you tell yourself: "I've always..."...your body says: "But not now."

Just read a post by Charles Navarro regarding NAPA gold filters . There are two approved vendors that supply filters to NAPA . Mann/Hummel ( Wix ) and Premium Guard . The M/H Wix filters made in the US or Mexico are still high quality . The filters marked made in China are made by Fleet Guard and are to be avoided .

I'm telling yo0u boyz...the youtube videos on oil filters by Brand Ranks are worth your time. I've never seen filters tested as thoroughly as they do. Far beyond the old run it,hen cut it open stuff.

Oh I take plenty of breaks when I need them. In fact every once in a while a whole day off - to do whatever I want - even if just to lounge around and do nothing. These are my "mental health days" - but I'm sure also provide rest for the body.

My Dad always stayed busy doing things around the house - was very handy. Built an add on to the back of our garage for his little shop. We grew up in that kind of household so why wouldn't I follow in Dad's footsteps?

That said, I'm OK to farm something out if it's beyond my capacity. Otherwise I like being self-sufficient. And taking breaks and letting my body rest and this time of year especially let my head cool back down!

Unless I've done a lot of internet research to learn differently, I try to always stick with OEM filters. It's so easy to get Motorcraft filters anywhere that I would never put anything else on my Ford truck. Autozone stocks the big ones for my 7.3 diesel but if they did not, I'd buy them online or over the counter at the dealer. It's not like you need to buy one everyday or even every week.

For European cars, I use either Mann, Hengst or Mahle generally...as long as they were OEM for the vehicle, it's going to be good. For Asian vehicles, same thing. My parts supplier can always tell me what brand was OEM, so even if the box does not say Toyota or Suzuki on it, it's OEM.

Many times, OEM filters have proprietary patented features that cannot be legally copied by competitors. Usually involving bypass features but possibly other things. I learned long ago that fuel filters for my Powerstroke can only be Motorcraft or the company that designed the fuel system, (can't remember the name). I know that we are talking about oil filters but the same principles apply.

Well...As I went to the shelf yesterday, I have two Mobil 1 oil filters in the box next to the oil. What I didn't have was enough oil. The good news...I had about 8 gallons of used motor oil built up over the years and was able to get it out of the garage.

Mobil 1 was on sale at O'Rielly's in the 5 qt jugs.
