Tales from my neck of the woods...

Howdy, or how we greet in South Affrica - "Howzit", slang for How's it going?

I've been lurking around here for many, many years. First under a different User Name and lost my Login details, then re-registered and kept lurking for another ten years or so. Many times I arrived at a point where I almost made a post of relevance, but for some inexplicable reason I never took the plunge. Be that as it may, I do feel I have many stories to contribute, so here goes... My first post of hopeful significance...

I'm a Porsche nut from Durban South Africa with lots of track time under the belt, but I also have appreciation for all things Motoring. IE - a Petrolhead, so here goes...

The only time I ever heard "howzit" was from Dog The Bounty Hunter, and he was in Hawaii. Lol. Welcome.

Thanks Marty.

Around here we have a very active Porsche Club, Ferrari Club and some others. We have a short little roller coaster track called Dezzi Raceway, about 150km south of Durban. I host 4 Supercar Track Days a year at this track. We started small with about 15 entries per event about 10 years ago, but it's grown into a popular local event. Nowadays we get entries from Cape Town and Johannesburg regularly. We usually put about 50 cars together, but this past weekend we had 80 entries. It was a blast!

Two sweet pics from this past weekend that captured a sense of speed. I was fortunate to spend some laps behind the wheel in both these, as well as a few others....

Even did some laps with this little fun mobile. It's very slow compared to what I'm used to, but a giggle and a hoot to drive. A "momentum" car. - Dont ever lose momentum, because it's gonna take you forever to build it back up again...

Durban. I remember jumping off the end of the pier with a surfboard under my arm, because the swells were too big for a paddleout. An excellent stop on the way to Jeffreys.

We live just 15km north of Durban in a holiday town / suburb called Umhlanga Rocks, affectionately known as "The Village". We're close to the beach, high up in an apartment block with 180 degrees ocean views and are fortunate to view daily wildlife activity. Lots of whales (Right-back, Humpback and occasional Sperm Whales). Heck we've seen a Killer Whale the other day, most mornings at around 07.00am a very playful school of about 50 dolphins come past, heading south. We've seen sharks circulating, we've witnessed the famous "Sardine Run" and a few years ago we saw a humpback whale giving birth. Took her three hours of labour, the ocean water around her turned red and a short while afterwards she swam away with her newborn calf right next to her.

Plenty birdlife also, kites, fish eagles, woolly-necked storks, Egyptian geese and a whole lot more. We are fortunate to live here. The views are fantastic and change by the minute...

Umhlanga Rocks. I like it there. The cliff and the beautiful vista. Is the great swimming pool complex near Kings Park still there? The water slide was haha dangerous fun.

Speaking of dangerous, I was sitting in the pool and I could hear Nelson Mandela speaking to the Zulu people in Kings Park. That would have been about 1989/1990 I guess. Drove up as far north as Richard's Bay too.
