Yo mechanics!
Steve posted this on the "shorts" thread...does this work for all cars with serpentine belts?

I know my BMW 330 has the ability to lock the tensioner. I recently replaced two tensioners on my F150, and I did not see where it was possible.

I was going to comment on Steve's post. I think many cars have something similar, but I'm pretty sure that not all cars have the same capability.

A couple years ago, on my Fit, I had my serp belt break and had to change it by myself. Didn't have the long handle tool to hold it back, so I McGyvered up some wrenches and blocks of wood to hold it in place while putting the new one on.
I never saw a hole in the adjuster....but I wasn't looking or aware of one. The method he shows wouldn't work if the old belt snapped. :D |
most tensioners have a lock like that from the factory.
It may not be visible with the belt under tension, but most have it. |
