The Deer Hunter vs Apocalypse Now vs gurls
I was just talking to my wife of 30 years and I teased her saying that I would like to put 'The Deer Hunter' and 'Apocalypse Now' on continuous loop on a couple of TV's. I'm selling our cabin and those movies were staples so why not. Well I was surprised. Apparently, "Those movies are boring". WTF???...I guess the "Robert Duvall bit on the beach in A N. was acceptable" but the rest was poo, poo. HUH??
So she said that The Godfather 1 & 2 were ok but man I can't believe that someone thinks that 'The Deer Hunter" and "Apocalypse Now" are boring movies. BTW she's not into Rom-coms either. So I guess The Deer Hunter and A N. are definitely going on loop...I didn't ask about "Deliverance". |

So you're saying potential buyers of your cabin will see those movies playing on two of the TVs while they're looking at buying it?

All the movies mentioned require audience participation from beginning to end. The director crafted a journey and is telling a story; the violence has a purpose and a place, the dialogue has been wordsmithed to elicit thought and feeling.
There is no thought of a sequel after the denouement. I have thoughts on all of them. I think There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men should be listed along with the three in the OP as movies that need complete viewer concentration to get the full measure of the film.

They are hard movies to get through. They are 10 out of 10 each. Exquisite.
Deliverance is not even close. If this persists, maybe a Fredo fishing trip?

OP, you have a dark streak. I am a big fan of Apocalypse Now AND the Godfather. I would suggest something easier to approach. Blues Brothers? Happy Gilmore? Star Wars? You want to sell the cabin, not win an award. The movies you suggest are kind of traumatic (example: I have never seen Deer Hunter as I heard about the russian roulette scene and just don't want to see it.)

Both great movies from a different time.
Two that haven't dated... "Black Rain" and "Heat".

I saw Apocalypse Now when I was very young. I don't remember exactly when, but I saw it with my parents. I didn't remember much of it, mostly some of the scenes with lots of explosions and fighting, what a young kid would remember. I recently watched it again, and while it was interesting, I don't see myself ever watching it again. It had some great performances, and there were bits of it that I enjoyed, the longer it went on, the weirder it got, and the less I was interested.

^^^I was similar but opposite. I saw the theater cut long ago. Not sure when. I recently saw the director's cut, which was longer - maybe 3 hours? I really loved it. And I don't have much patience and get bored easily.

Plus it’s violent. Yeah - might want to rethink that approach. Walk into a house to view and see a guy blow his brains out in front of me on the idiot box isn’t going to make me buy a place. It’s just going to make me say this guy is nuts and a purchase would be a nightmare - I’m out of here. |
