Went to Springfield for lunch
Since we moved 60 miles west, I don't go back to Springfield often. Once a year to the dentist and once in a while to talk to my insurance agent has been about it.
But Vic and I went back yesterday (for reasons I won't mention in PPOT) and had lunch at one of the Creole places. It was a lot like our experiences eating in Mexico, right here in Ohio(but not as tasty). I was expecting PoBoys and Gumbo on the menu, but what they had was probably more authentic Haitian fare. Almost everything on the menu included a pound of rice and beans and some plantain. I don't like plantain and Vicki doesn't like rice (or beans), but we persevered. I didn't know what Griot was, had to look it up on my phone because the waiter didn't speak good enough English and I speak no Creole (shades of our Mexican experiences). It is braised pieces of pork butt with a spicy sauce on the side. So we both ordered Griot - with rice and beans and plantain. I was intrigued by the hot dogs with spaghetti on the breakfast menu, but next time we are going to the other Creole place that DOES have PoBoys and Gumbo. :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1728131932.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1728131932.jpg |
Looks yummy!
It's only later in life I have become a bit more adventuresome in my food choices. I find I have missed so much delicious experiences. Best Les |
My uncle used to rave about plantains. I didn't get it after trying them.

Awesome. The unique foods from around the globe are a source of great pleasure for me.

Right, I assume that when most folks think "creole" they have one particular thing in mind (and probably often food from NO.
I think there are multiple definitions and types of creole. Merriam Webster says: Quote:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Creole_people I do like Caribbean food. I'd be game to try Haitian, but if I'd had my heart set on cajun/NO style food, I'd also be disappointed. |
Me making authentic Haitian food. (Just kidding. Please don't send to PARF.)

There are all kinds of jokes just dying to get out there.

I'm going to head over there from Columbus and give it a go too.
|
I would try the place on Fountain Ave rather than the one on South Limestone if you want more Nawlins type Creole.

OMG Dixie that was hilarious! And so original! How did you ever come up with anything so clever?

Thanks for posting wdfifteen- I've always loved Griot, and that looks like a good menu. FYI- The Stockfish (rehydrated salt cod) is a fantastic Haitian breakfast item. Also- the Russian salad is a Haitian take on Salat Olivier (a creamy mayo-based potato salad with peas).

It’s not like Floriduh doesn’t have Haitians now is it… |
Dixie wins the thread. Awesome.

I'd eat the salad and some pork. Whatever that thing in the middle of the plate is, it really doesn't look like rice. It looks like something you use for fishing.

Ah. I've had "Stockfish" in Portugal. I guess I'm too much of an Ohio meat and potatoes farm kid to appreciate it. I wondered what the Russian salad was. Sounds good. If I go back I'll probably ask for Griot and a Russian salad. The sauce for the Griot was perfect, lightly spicey. |
