One of my latest obsession.... SOCKS

I was complaining to my brother, he tends to send me down these rabbit holes, that I wanted socks that would keep my feed warm. He said he wore Smart Wool and liked them. I looked into the Smart Wool which opened up a can of worms. Merino wool, Alpaca... Blends, It's game on now!

I tried Alpaca by Willowace, several random brands of Merino wool from Amazon, and Darn Tough. Lemme tell ya, Darn Tough Merino wool socks are AMAZING. They're like a nice hug for your feet. They have just the right amount of compression and the warmth and wicking ability and the quality are top notch. I never realized how much a good pair of socks helped when hiking. I have the "tactical" T3001, T4021 and T4033. The difference is thickness and percentage of Merino wool. The thickest are the T4033. I wear them for cold day stand hunts. If it's not REALLY cold, I use the 4021's. For hiking I wear the 3001's. The main reason I went with the T's was due to those being what TJ Maxx had. They were labeled "slightly irregular" and the price was only 9.99 per pair where the normal Darn Tough typically cost a lot more. The S.I's don't come with the lifetime warranty. I still haven't figured out what was slightly irregular about them!

If you haven't found the joy of a nice pair of socks, I'd suggest looking into the Darn Tough or any other quality brand. BTW I'm not paid for this nor was I asked to review the product. I just really like their socks!

I wear support stockings as a daily driver.

I buy socks like you are talking about and the wife steals them quicker than you can say Jackie Robinson

Had 3 sweet pairs of wool socks a patient gave me, gone, all gone

I’ve been wearing the Darn Tough socks for years and can tell you that they are indeed darn tough; they last and last.

Socks lie fully in the body <--> ground chain, like tires and matresses. Giving up on old soggy crappy socks was one of my better life choices.

Pro tip: buy two or more pair of any sock that you like. If a pair gets "donated" to family, you still have a pair. If you lose a single, you still have at least a pair. It's so obvious a solution path that most don't even consider it.

Or I'm just thickheaded and soon I'll discover something else that everyone already knew...

{Icebreaker and smartwool here, my dresser is nearly devoid of any non-wool sock)

Silk sock liners. Sweat is what makes your feet cold and silk sock liners help keep your feet dry.

I'm not in a cold climate like you guys, but I do like a good pair of socks to wear with my Merrel's when I wear shoes.
I found some that don't make my feet sweat like a pig and aren't too confining as in man do these hug my feet tight. Just the right amount of cushioning too. I bought an extra 12 pack once I decided they were for me.
Then I found out they also made shorty socks just like the crew's so I tried them. Yup, exactly the same only ankle high. Bought two 12 packs of them too.
I shouldn't need to buy socks again in my lifetime I don't think.

Got my first pair of smartwool socks in I think 1995. Bought them consistently for many years. Stopped buying them about 10 years ago when I noticed the quality slide. Still a decent sock though. Since started working from home these last 4 years, I no longer obsess about socks. Whatever I get for Xmas is good enough.

You'd think all my socks were 10mm the way they get lost.

Wool socks are great.
Shooting socks. Go bigtime! :)

So yer just not gonna tell us what you found? I see. They name streets after guys like you... One Way :D

The thing I like about DT is that they offer thinner socks for warmer weather. The moisture wicking ability of the Merino wool is nice too. I don't really have the sweaty feet problem but my feet are always dry when I take my socks off after a walk in the woods. I like the full cushion or cushion on the heel and ball and they seem to hug arch of the foot nicely.

My wife thinks I've lost my mind. I always ask "did you look for socks" when she goes to TJ Maxx or Marshalls. My son is a convert as well.

Forgot…I have amassed a collection of Bombas socks. Like em

masraum 10-09-2024 03:56 PM

wool socks rock. As long as they aren't too thick/heavy, they can be worn in the summer, and they help your feet not smell.

OK .... I finally had to click ....

At 27.95 a pair .... I would have a sock drawer .... literally.

I would alternate feet each day and it would usually be empty :D

That's why I buy the "Slightly Irregular" other than them being just like me... they "only" cost $10 at TJ Maxx and Marshalls if they have them. I bought seven pair for myself another three pair for my son and gave my daughter one of my five so now I'm down to six. I have two pair each of the ones listed above. Then I have my MIC Tenysaf cheap ones from Amazon. They're thinner and I'm not convinced they have the same percentage of Merino wool that my DT's have.

cabmandone 10-09-2024 05:30 PM

BTW, I didn't give the Willowace Alpaca socks much of a try. They weren't thick enough for the time of year I wanted them for. Never gave much thought to wearing them in the summer.

I have wool hiking socks that I can’t remember the name of and that cost a bundle.

But for everyday - non dress sock - wear I really like these.

Oh yeah! If anyone is into Smart Wool socks, TJ Maxx and Marshalls have them too if you have one of those stores in the area. I think they're 12.99 a pair. I might go buy some just for some comparison.

wildthing 10-09-2024 07:00 PM

I stumbled upon Darn Tough when I was in a "Made in USA" buying spree. I maybe have three or four pairs, but somebody gifted a bunch of Bombas so I haven't bought any more.

Racerbvd 10-09-2024 07:10 PM

One doesn't wear socks with Sperry Topsiders.

Tobra 10-09-2024 08:43 PM

Strong point, never wore those with socks, not once. Not a winter shoe though

My wife hates the topsiders, actually tried to throw them out once. I got a new pair, made her think I was giving in and let her think she won, until the next day
