I don't have any advise on the gun issues. However I do have direct personal experience with bear spray. My wife accidentally set ours off loading my pack before a hike. Let me tell you it is some seriously bad stuff--instant respiratory distress and eye watering as in you cannot see anything. This was a short blast in my pack not aimed at our faces and we had to clear out of our house. I would not want to be on the receiving end of that stuff ever. A ranger at Glacier Nat Park told me they have never had a grizzly not back down from a direct hit of bear spray, I totally understand why. I also carry the lead bear spray too, just in case.

i've got a somewhat embarrassing story about checking the function of pepper spray bought for my wife.

I won't go into details but she will tell you without question even a small amount of that stuff will cause problems.

back on topic.

can the OP modify the apartment door? when we had apartments, some of the tenants wanted better doors. we ended up installing way more secure doors with killer locks.

I still need to get off my ass and install an exterior door with deadbolt for my bedroom. really retrofit it to keep people out, best I can. can you do that for your daughter?

There is a modification that can be done to the earlier weapons to ease reassembly, hammer strut brace I think, there is also a tool you can buy to help make it easier

Since we've moved on to spoon acquisition, which is where all threads naturally head, a question:

What is a good online place to buy used spoons without going through auctions?

Oh, and anyone selling a P7?

I think guns may be just about the only thing I don't buy online these days.

Seems like better prices and ease at gun shows, then again houston area has more gun shows than starbucks.

If you want something super nice Collectors firearms in houston puts everything online and has absurd selection. Place is literally closer to a museum than a store. I have bought several guns from them. Prices are probably on the higher side, but you are guaranteed no surprises

https://collectorsfirearms.com/

If you want an anti aircraft tank, a 6 figure anchient collectable colt, or a $400 .22 they got it. Counted 3 dozen vintage python/anaconda/diamondback revolvers last visit

1. She could join the military at this age and make life and death decisions
2. She could go buy a firearm on her own; she is old enough. Luckily, she is asking for your help.

Now to my advice as a woman and a mom:
I did not grow up with firearms. I married very young to a military officer. He started taking me to the range early in our dating because a firearm was kept in the house. I think taking her to the range and signing her up for safety classes should come first before the discussion purchasing a firearm. She should be comfortable with all aspects of gun ownership including the safe maintenance, target shooting and responsible handling.

As for the SSRI: that may be a concern. I believe she should be included in any discussions as to how that might effect things. You will need an open line of communications.

As the parent of a young adult: your job at this point is not to say nor make decisions for her. Your job is to guide her to become more a responsible, happy adult.
100%. First conversation I had with all of my kids (and stepkids) when they hit 18..."You're an adult. You make your own choices. I will no longer tell you what to do; I will always be here to give you advice when you ask for it, and sometimes when you don't. What you do with that advice is your decision."

My oldest daughter lived in a not-great area her 2nd year of college. I wasn't thrilled with the risks but it was her choice. Man, was I happy when she moved (3 years later) to a much nicer neighborhood.

I lived a very free-range life. I want the same freedom for my kids...but at least they have me as a safety net if they NEED AND WANT it.

Good luck whatever choice you and your daughter make.

Try the "not a word" method sometime. You'll feel like such a boss as you get back to the game without missing a pitch.

I would think you have a 100% chance of getting bear spray in your own face when using in close quarters, perhaps incapacitating yourself. Using at a "safe distance" means you didn't need to use it, legally speaking. I don't see how that's a good option.

I looked at that, agree. A giant cloud of bear spray in the confines of a small apartment could easily affect the girls capacity to fight back.

Funny, I told my wife (who is very anti gun) about the byrna pistols. She paused, and was like...'huh, I want one of those.'

A big old mastiff if you can stand the drool. They just lie there until you need them to get up. Then they do so with authorit-ah. An unhappy bullmastiff is quite a sight.

Of course if not properly socialized they can get a wee bit overprotective - but that’s not always a bad thing.

Chez nous we have always had pit bulls or mixes - the wife rescues - and I remember the shady looking guy helping replace our windows commenting on how no one was ever robbing our house after seeing a couple of them.

He was oddly prescient…

A bryna pistol would be fun at student parties too. Shooting beer cans off the top of other kids heads etc.
